ound the neighborhood just before reaching this secluded spot on the hill. I find a soft patch of grass to sit. He settles at my side at the other end of his long leash, and we share a moment, daydreaming in the sun. His gaze locks on the occasional bird but he stays put, my silent protector with a soft heart. After a moment, I stand, produce a ball from my backpack, and toss it. He looks at me as if I'm crazy. Stays sitting. He has enough space to run after it, but nope, he's content to let it be. I nudge him to go get it but he stretches, stands, and walks casually from me, watching me and waiting for -me- to get it. Oho, a smart man, just lazy enough to not let fetch, but with a readiness to jump happily when I switch the toy of choice from ball to tug rope. He has a good hold on the thing, determined to win this prize. But when I move to take it away, he lets me without any nippy protest, only jumping a few times to try taking it back. I put it behind my back and he sits again, waiting for me to initiate the game once more, his tail wagging with childlike eagerness. We play for a bit more, sharing in this moment of bliss, until he hears something, stops, looks up to make sure I'm safe, that we're both still together. I reassure him it's just a silly motorcycle in the distance, and he trusts my good judgement, and back to the game we go! He jogs home with me, his ears pulled back and slowing to look behind him sometimes to make sure I can keep up. When we get inside, he patiently lets me feed him. But boy does he eat like a pig, having to look up occasionally to take in his surroundings. Curious, nosey boy! The bowl clinks in protest as he slides it across the mat with his hungry gobbling. After he's done, he pads into the living room where he rests his head in my lap, and we watch a romantic comedy together until my gentle massage to his chest and shoulders lulls him to flop on his back for belly rubs. He falls asleep like that, a blissful grin painting his face. And I smile, feeling calm and blessed to know him." Dee is housebroken and crate trained. He prefers to company of people to other animals but will do well with a calm, submissive female companion. The perfect forever family for Dee is one that enjoys snuggling on the sofa and the occasional brisk walk. He would do well as an only pet but would probably enjoy the company of a submissive female. Children middle school age or older.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
