ee: $125 Suki is about 5 years old and found herself at the local shelter for 1.5 months and struggling with ear infections and neurological issues. She is sweet as can be and due to her neuro issues, she's a little quirky but that makes her so much more lovable. Ruff Start was able to help and her new foster is going to be taking care of her and getting her the help she needs so we can find her the perfect home. Suki has been to the vet and they have confirmed that she has IVDD and also neurological issues that may have been caused by a traumatic brain injury or exposure to a toxin. Her condition is not expected to improve, but can be managed for a good quality of life. Suki seems to be very happy and active in her foster home, and we are confident that she has a perfect family out there waiting for her! Suki has had slow intros to the other dogs in her foster home. She seems to be stressed meeting new animals, but because of her neuro "quirks" it makes it hard to tell. She also became protective of the woman in the house and does not like the other dogs approaching her. She might do best as an only animal, but the foster will continue to try and work with her to get her more comfortable with other dogs. er current foster doesn't currently have any cats so we are not sure how she will do with them. She is the sweetest girl and loves to give kisses and snuggle! She likes to play with toys and go for walks as well, but boy can she pull! She is currently working on her leash manners, and her "sit" is probably the cutest thing you'll ever see since it is so unique. She is kennel trained and house broken as well. So far she has not chewed on anything that wasn't a toy in her foster home. She is very quiet but is starting to bark at strangers on the sidewalk from inside the yard as she becomes more comfortable. You can definitely tell that the first part of her life wasn't great because she an become frightened easily and look for a place to hide, however since she is getting more and more comfortable in her foster home, she has come out of her shell and opened up a lot more and it's adorable seeing her experience her first "family". 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
