lp you rescue a perfect pet! Arriving at VBACAC as a stray our little STEPPER girl has not just stepped into our hearts but flown into them! Stepper's sweet personality, although a little timid at first, is coming out daily and she is showing how friendly, loving and playful she is. Even upon first meeting her, it is clear she wants to trust you and know you. She wants you to take her out and love on her. She wants you to give her all the attention you can give without sparing any. At our first meeting, she let me harness her up easily although she was a little wiggly knowing it was her turn to go outside. She pottied immediately which tells me she most likely is already house trained although being in the shelter, living in a cage, and only being let out certain times of the day may require a bit of a refresher course. Outside walking on the leash Stepper was a joy. She seemed to be enjoying every moment of the fresh air and being able to sniff around. She was smiling. She was good on the leash and would check back at me to make sure I was there. She was smiling...a lot! It was clear she has been exposed to walking on a leash prior to her arrival at VBAC. When we got to the barnyard, Stepper immediately started running back and forth. She is very treat motivated and would run back and forth looking for treats! Stepper kept on smiling! She is a jumper, especially for treats! She will be one you can definitely train to do tricks like maybe even turning lights on and off! She likes to jump, remember?!? When Stepper took treats from my hand, she was not the most gentle but certainly not the hardest either! A little consistency on a schedule and this girl will be even better than she already is! Stepper didn't chase after the tennis balls at all in the yard but I'm sure after a little time and patience (and treats) she can learn how to fetch. She's a smart one as she certainly proved when going to where the treats were! This happy go lucky girl is waiting at the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center for a wonderful family to fall in love with her and call her their own. Stepper is also in a special spot in the shelter, right by a kennel door. This is a special spot because there is a lot of movement of people and other dogs through the door which can drive some dogs crazy. Stepper is taking this spot in stride which may give us a hint that she might be good with other dogs. This being said, we don't yet know exactly how she feels about other dogs or cats so bring yours in (dogs only of course!) so we can have a meet and greet. We also don't yet know how she feels about children or if any exposure she has had with children was positive or not, so bring them in and we can also see how everyone responds to each other. Come meet Stepper at the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA *** Update- Stepper recently spent two weeks in a foster home while she recovered from spay surgery. He foster family said she was a pleasure to have. Very sweet girl and respectful in the home. 100 percent house trained and actually went into her crate on her own to sleep. She wasn't reactive when meeting other dogs. Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center has wonderful pets available for adoption. As of December 6, all animals are now at the new shelter at 341 Birdneck Road. The former shelter on Leroy Drive is now closed. If you have lost a pet, please visit the shelter in person and often as lost animals arrive everyday. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
