ld love to help you rescue a perfect pet! OM is a young boy estimated to be between 1 and 5 years old. He is so super happy! He is especially excited when he knows it's his turn to go outside. He is pretty good on the leash although, like any young and excited boy, he does pull a little when walking but you know as well as I do that young boys have things to do, places to go, and people to meet! Practice makes perfect and not only that, practice creates that special time you can spend with your new family member; practice creates that special bond you build with your new family member. After just a short walk, I got the feeling he could make a perfect running partner with just a little practice. Om is looking for an active family who will provide him daily exercise and even a little training so he can keep his mind busy, learn new things and gain some extra confidence. We are not yet sure how he feels about other dogs however, he seems very interested in them. For now, let's call him dog selective and strongly encourage any resident dog be brought in for a meet and greet so we can at least get an idea of how they feel about each other. Om can get really excited and start jumping around creating quite the wrestling match to put on a harness but it's all out of excitement and once he's put on a schedule with some training and daily activity, we're sure this boy will become well balanced and easy going. Om is currently in a back kennel waiting a spot in adoption so if you are interested in meeting him, please just come to the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center located at 341 S Birdneck Rd in Va Beach and ask to meet him. Thank you for considering adoption! Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center has wonderful pets available for adoption. As of December 6, all animals are now at the new shelter at 341 Birdneck Road. The former shelter on Leroy Drive is now closed. If you have lost a pet, please visit the shelter in person and often as lost animals arrive everyday. Contact Information: Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center, 341 Birdneck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 Phone 757-385-4444 (x 2) NOTE: In order to help process your request for information faster, please refer to the animal's intake number, shown next to the photo, rather than the name. This will assist us in locating the information about the animal you are referring to. All our animals are up-to-date on vaccinations and if unaltered, the animal will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. You do not have to be a resident of Va. Beach to adopt a pet. Please visit these wonderful animals today!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
