am overflowing with love to give. I was found by a good Samaritan chained up and emaciated behind an abandoned house and my foster mom thinks I may have been used for breeding. I lived at the Wake County Animal Center for a couple of months and thrived on all the attention I was given by the volunteers. They all told my foster mom that I was a favorite! Unfortunately, the noise started to get to me and I decided that I'd really prefer to have a home of my own. So, my foster family pulled me out and now I am loving life! I am a mellow girl and I love to be with people, but I don't need a lot of attention. In short, I am the perfect dog! I love riding in the car, I am great on a leash, and I am good in my crate while my foster family is out. I would also probably do very well in the house and not need to be crated in my forever home. I like male dogs that are around my size or bigger, but I must be properly introduced. I am more wary of female dogs, therefore am looking for a home as an only dog, or with a male fur brother. I have not been tested with cats. My idea of a great time is rolling in the grass, chewing on a squeaky toy, taking a nap, or just hanging out with my people. I am very smart and love to watch what's going on around me, without needing to get involved. I have quickly learned several commands and have been doing well in the house with potty breaks every couple of hours. I am heart worm positive, but I will be starting my treatment soon and hope to be healthy by early summer. I am about 3 years old and have reached a good weight of just over 50 pounds. My foster family loves me dearly, but knows they are just a stop on my journey to find a home of my own. Could you be my person? I am currently available for the foster to adopt option Second Chance offers. I am heartworm positive, and I get my shots on May 8th. I can be officially adopted 30 days after my treatment, but am free to go to my forever home before then. As of May 8th, I am spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, have been dewormed, and am current on my monthly Preventatives. My adoption fee is $275. If you have additional questions about me, please email the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
