affordshire Terrier and possibly Labrador mix girl that was born in October 2014 and weighs 68 pounds. She is a Heartworm survivor and is now heartworm free after completing her treatment. She is very gentle and adores everyone including children...she likes to give them kisses:) She is great around other dogs during our doggie playgroups. Shelby is a big lovergirl. She is not a lap dog, but loves to snuggle. She loves to be brushed and scratched at the base of her tail. She is so funny in the mornings and likes to choose the toy she takes outside with her everyday. She likes a good squeaker toy and will slowly wear it out:) She also loves kongs, hooves, antlers, and nylabones. She is very food motivated and will do well with training because of this. She has a fake "howl" and will throw her head back and try to howl with the other dogs when she hears sirens, but no sound comes out...it's hilarious! She also gets excited when the mail carrier or the Fedex delivery people come by and is the first to go greet them through the fence. Shelby loves to go on walks, but tends to pull when on a leash. She is getting better, but needs someone strong to be the one that handles her on walks. One of our highschool volunteers describes Shelby as follows: "When the volunteers first got to take Shelby on a walk, we noticed how awesome she was. On the beginning of the walk she was so happy to be there. When we walked her around, she was so energetic and loving with the other dogs and people...it made everyone smile. She’s the type of dog that just puts happiness on peoples' faces and in peoples' hearts. When we got to a stopping point we wanted to see what Shelby knew and she already knew "sit", "lay down", and "stay." She is so intelligent and eager to learn! She is the perfect dog for any family and loves children beyond belief. Many children came up to pet her and she rolled over and just wanted to play. She also loves to show how much she loves you with doggy kisses. Shelby is one of the best dogs the volunteers have ever had the privilege of being with and she needs the best forever home!" The adoption fee is $90 which includes a free veterinary exam within 2 weeks of adoption at local participating vets, up to date vaccinations, test for heartworms & heartworm preventative medication, dewormer, flea preventative, microchip, & spay or neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
