ix buddy! Noise Level? I’m pretty quiet Good with Dogs? Dog-selective—perhaps a female canine companion would suit me. Good with Cats? No cats, if you please. Good with Kids? Older children only, if you please. Good with Strangers? With proper introductions. Potty Trained? I’m a pro! Crate Trained? I’m fine without one but will settle in if needed. Interested? Learn more about Chico below! About Chico: Chico is a senior boy who is looking for his perfect forever home. He’s a gentleman whose mission in life is to protect and make happy his human. Chico is fully potty-trained and responds to basic commands (sit, stay, come, no, go). Chico catches on quickly to routines, has a sixth sense as to his human's mood, loves going on walks, and loves to sit in the sun and snooze. He is a mellow, senior pit bull who becomes alert and inquisitive to new sounds and people. Chico was surrendered by his former owner and eventually found as a stray before joining the TCPR family. He shows extreme loyalty and devotion once he trusts his environment. His joyful yelps, exuberant prancing, and manic tail wags welcome you home whether you've been gone for 8 hours or 15 minutes! He quietly lies at your feet when you're watching TV, reading, or studying, but stays out of your way when you're working. He weighs 51 pounds but his calm demeanor would make him perfect for a smaller home. Because of his protective nature, Chico takes clues from his human in welcoming new people into his home. He has done well interacting with older, respectful kids. He will need slow introductions when socializing with dogs (he can be dog-selective, so would likely do best with a mellow female canine companion). Chico has a mild form of hypothyroidism and is on a low-cost daily pill regimen, which he will need for the rest of his life. He has recently received a full dental cleaning as well. The first year of Chico's thyroid medications and 1 round of thyroid testing have been SPONSORED and are FREE through TCPR. Email us for more information! Chico will make a wonderful companion to an energetic-but-busy career person or an easy-going individual who likes walks, many doggy kisses, and who wants to learn everything Chico knows! He is truly one of the sweetest pups we’ve ever known! Adoption Fee: $0, which includes up-to-date vaccinations and preventatives, spay/neuter, microchip, negative heartworm test, negative fecal test, and dental prophylaxis/cleaning. It also includes a full year of thyroid medication for Chico! Training Requirement: Yes, shy/fearful class recommended but obedience would be accepted as well. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
