Say hello to WDR's resident tripod Fidget! Our handicapable guy has a zest for life that's truly catching. Fidget isn’t defined by his 3 legs and can do anything a 4-legged dog can do - with way more enthusiasm :) He's one of the most people-loving dogs we’ve ever met. He loves children of all ages and is especially sweet and caring if anyone is hurting. He’s one of those special dogs that's totally in tune with his humans. Fidget’s favorite things: • Meeting new people - The doorbell is the best sound in the WORLD! He gets excited but only barks once, just to let you know something EXCITING is happening! • Matching your energy - Time to watch TV and relax? Great, he’ll snuggle down in his bed with a toy. Time to walk or run a mile or two? He’s so ready. • Peanut butter treats – Fidget works hard fo’ the money. He’s great on commands and enjoys showing off his tricks. • The neighborhood kids – All the local kids adore Fidget, and the feeling is mutual. He's been exemplary with his diligent foster family’s newborn baby. He isn’t overly interested, keeps a respectful distance, and might offer a sniff once a day with a happy tail wag. Our favorite things about Fidget: • He’s got the best smile, from ear to ear. It’s an engaging smile that says I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! and it's always splitting his giant head in two =D before dancing into his big brown eyes. • He's fully crate trained, house broken, sleeps in his crate and often puts himself to bed. • He’s very food motivated and enjoys training time and learning new tricks. • Fidget is a powerfully positive dog. Sure, he didn’t have the easiest childhood - he came from a local reservation where he was injured and rescued by local authorities at just 10 months old, needing to have his broken leg amputated - but he’s a forward-looking dog who doesn't carry his past with him. And he looks forward to giving all of his love and smiles to you. Check out Fidget and his Jolly Egg BOL - https://youtu.be/dDYmT3GYlDg Fidget is about 4 years young and a solid 55 pounds. He may be missing a limb but he's a big, strong boy who didn't need that extra one. He'll do best in a home with people who live a leadership lifestyle with their animals. He prefers clearly defined boundaries and rules and is happy to work for the nice things in his life. He would love a family with children and/or lots of people, but Fidge will do best as an only pet and is excellent at entertaining himself at home while you're away. Just because he's down a leg, don't let that lull you into thinking he doesn't require exercise. He enjoys at least one walk a day, with frequent rest breaks, and can certainly be ready to go out for a second or third jaunt in the fresh air. He's fixed and current on everything, and we'd be happy to provide professional training to ensure a successful future with his new family. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
