been treated roughly before based on the way he tucks his head at times. He has a natural inclination for vigilance and loves to run the fence regularly to be sure there is no intruder. He's quite proud of himself about that. When we sit outside or in the house, he sits with his back to me looking outward...out of protection for me. With that said, I've never seen aggression. He's protective...and sometimes when a male comes near he has to be shown that I accept the male, and then he's relaxed and at ease. He and his 'sister' dog are great friends with the pool guy. (I think he's a pretty good judge of character.) He LOVES to run, and can fly after a ball like nobody's business. He then romps around the yard utterly proud of his find...not THAT good at giving the ball back. But he's smart. A little attention and guidance and he'd quickly learn. He's eager to please and is always sad if he has to be in time out. He'll sit, stay, down, up up (invitation to get on the bed or couch)...and chase the ball. He's an ideal candidate for agility training. Baldur doesn't like to swim...he's afraid...but does love to lie on the top step of the pool and chill. He loves to wear shirts and look pretty. He needs a loving home with someone who will spend time with him and make him your best friend. He's very dear to me. But I got very sick after I got him... and eventually lost my eyesight and am now fed through a tube. Baldur needs attention and training he hasn't had, and I no longer have the ability to give it to him - he's a wonderful and beautiful guy. I so hope someone really wonderful will choose him to be your best friend. If you feel your home might be the right place for such a great dog - the place to start is with the adoption application found at www.dfwrescueme.org/adopt. Once submitted, the foster will contact you promptly to tell you more and to arrange a time to meet! The adoption fee for all of our dogs is $250.00, which includes their vaccinations and spay/neuter. Baldur is participating in the DFW Rescue Me Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by their foster, not by DFWRM.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
