spay/neutered, micro-chipped, de-wormed,heartworm tested, rabies and relevant vaccinations. NO DOG WILL BE ADOPTED TO BE AN OUTSIDE DOG! If you would like to start the adoption our process is below: Submit Application with two personal references and a vet reference. As long as we are able to contact your vet and references, it takes just 1-3 days to process and hopefully approve applications. Rescue processes and hopefully approves applications. Once approved, rescue invites applicant to come to the rescue to meet your chosen dog/s, spend time with him/her and then hopefully take him/her home. Once approved you are more than welcome to come and spend as long as you like with her/him . I just have to work on an appointment basis as I run a boarding/day care business and the rescue and so am really busy, but by planning ahead of time I can be pretty flexible. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org/adoption-application.html REESE-1 was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. REESE-1 is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 4 March 2017 and at the time of rescue in March 2018 weighed around 43 pounds. Reese-1 has been listed as a Australian Shepherd, however, we are not able to say for sure what breed he is, it is up to you to look at his pictures and decide what you think he looks like. He does have a docked tail. When Reese arrived at the rescue he was very quiet and obviously trying to take in all that has happened to him in the previous week. He was friendly and always very gentle. Over the next few days Reese started to get more of his personality and although still extremely gentle, he got a lot more playful and happy. He is great with other dogs and when let out of his pen whilst I'm cleaning will run up and down and say hello to his friends, but he doesn't antagonize the other dogs by barking outside their pens, he will just say hi and move on to the next dog, then keep running back to check on me. He is very friendly and affectionate and I believe with an active family would make a wonderful family addition. REESE does use the dog door to go out to do his business or enjoy the fresh air in his run. I do not know if he would let you know he needs to go out since she has 24/7 access to the outside, but he is extremely smart and do not think it would take long to learn. REESE is great with other dogs of all ages and sizes and is happy to run around chasing and wrestling. He has not shown any sign of aggression at all. He has a lot of energy and so he will need an active family. Someone who understands the importance of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. I have not seen him with children, but his demeanor and personality I have no doubt that he would be great with them and a lot of fun too. He needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with him themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. Reese rides good in the car. He is used to being with other dogs so a family with another dog would be great, however, if that is not the case, then play-dates with other dogs would be extremely beneficial for him. We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so cannot comment on how he would be near or around them. As with all rescue's he needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with him themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. Reese needs an active family and one that will keep her mind stimulated and challenged. Lots of hikes and adventures, training tricks, or agility, dock diving or other fun, active, stimulating activities would be perfect for this girl. A family that understands the need to be an alpha with working breed dogs. He is great with humans and I believe would be great with children, I am sure they could keep each other entertained for many hours. We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks. REESE-1 is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements. Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org REESE-1 is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
