house-trained, up-to-date with vaccinations, good with kids and good with dogs. I haven’t met any cats yet, but I’m sure I would love a new feline friend! Luke’s Story… Luke came to Central Aussie Rescue from a puppy mill in rural Iowa, where he rarely left his crate and had minimal interaction with people. Just days after coming into CARS’ care, Luke opened up into the sweet, loving pup he his. Luke is potty-trained and crate trained. He will let out a few barks or whimpers in his crate before he settles in. He even enters his crate on his own, if the door is left open. At night, he will sleep on the floor, but he does love to snuggle up in bed with you at the top of your pillow if you’ll allow him! Luke wants to be where you are, either snuggled up next to you or always just few footsteps behind you. He does get sad when you leave home, so Luke would do best in a home where there is someone checking in on him throughout the day. Although Luke is potty trained, he gets very excited when his owners come home from work. Sometimes he will piddle out of love—this is an endearing trait we are continuing to train him against. Luke warms up to women more quickly than men—although it doesn’t take long for him to become anyone’s best friend. He is great in social situations and will quickly earn everyone’s love! For this Luke would do best in a home with a woman as his main caregiver. Luke loves to join you on car rides and run around in the backyard. He will walk on a leash, but gets worn out very quickly! Luke is great with dogs of any size. His 70 lb foster brother and he love to chase each other around the yard and play tug of war (although Luke is usually the one getting tugged!). Because of his size, Luke is a little afraid of stairs. He has no problem running up stairs, but we are still working on going down stairs. With encouragement, he is making small strides. Any stairs covered in carpet would be better, a one story home may be best. Luke is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations (bordetella, rabies and distemper). He had a negative fecal and heartworm test and takes monthly preventives for heartworm and flea/tick prevention. Luke also just had a dental, so a beautiful smile to match that adorable face! Luke must has a fully fenced yard. No invisible fences please. This lovable boy is being fostered in the St. Louis, Missouri area. His adoption fee is $400.00. Every dog with Central Aussie Rescue is fully vetted, up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and evaluated before being listed for adoption. Interested adopters must fill out an application, either online or in person, to be considered. Please visit http://centralaussierescue.org for more information about how to help Aussies in need. We are an all-foster rescue located in Missouri, Illinois, and surrounding areas.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
