We advise that adopters do not send payment or deposits for pets prior to adopting. ***** Penny is 2yo, weighs 50lbs, is spayed, is up to date on her vaccines, and is microchipped. Penny dislikes/fears the dark and loud noises; she LOVES car rides ! Penny's guardian have spent a considerable amount of time and money to determine the underlying reason for Penny's sudden onset without success. She and her canine sibling are currently in a training program from which they'll graduate 1 March; Penny is learning how to properly walk on leash, sit, down, stay, and place. Although she's doing well, Penny attacked her canine sibling again recently, which prompted her guardian to keep them separated. Penny's guardian adds: "When she’s with just my husband or me, she’s content. But, she is much more content and visibly happy at training & doggy daycare because she’s active. We have 2 dogs in addition to Penny that we had before we adopted her - a 9yo lab and the 3yo lab. Our jobs are very demanding, and it was always fine that the dogs had a more chill lifestyle until recently. It is not fair to Penny to have to be crated or in another room because she can’t get along with our other dog anymore. We want her to be able to run freely, be as active as she possibly can. We are heartbroken, and this is the toughest decision we’ve ever had to make. But in the end, it’s about her happiness and quality of life that matters most." Penny's guardian explains why she has made the difficult decision to rehome her: Although Penny and one of her canine siblings were the best of friends, Penny has inexplicably attacked and bitten her a few times since December 2023. Lunge/Attack/Bite Incidents: Since December in 2023, in Hollywood, MD, Penny has attacked and bitten one of her canine sibling without provocation; the bite broke the skin, animal control was not involved and veterinary treatment was not necessary. Penny's guardian explains: "Penny lunged at and attacked our other dog. Our other dog ended up with a gsh in her ear, chest, and bit marks on her front leg. They were not severe, so we cleaned them up and they're healing." Penny's guardian states the following regarding children: Although Penny hasn't lived with children, her guardian recommends her living with children, stating "Penny loves our two young nieces and nephew. She is gentle with them, lays next to them, and loves when they play with her". Penny's guardian states the following regarding dogs: Although Penny lives with two dogs, her guardian doesn't recommend her living with dogs, stating "Prior to the first incident in December, we never had any issues with Penny and our dogs. They were all the best of friends, played great together, slept on top of each other, drank out of the water bowl together, truly inseparable. We have never had any issues with Penny with our neighbors' dogs, dogs at the vet, or groomer". Penny's guardian states the following regarding cats: Penny lives with a cat, so her guardian recommends Penny living with cats, stating "Penny and our cat are best friends". Penny's guardian describes her as follows: Very active Couch potato Playful Friendly Fence Jumper Likes to be touched Affectionate Independent Protective Always at your side Indoor dog House-Trained Crate-Trained Likes men Likes women Penny's guardian described her ideal future home: "Penny would truly thrive in an active home. Going on multiple daily walks, playing outside, going for frequent car rides, going to different parks or beaches, running and playing freely. She would benefit from a fenced yard with lots of room for her to run and play." Rehoming Fee: $200 Location: Hollywood, MD ***** ADOPTION PROCESS 1. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
