being brought into a small Louisiana shelter as part of a hoarding case. She was covered in mats and likely hadn’t gotten any one on one attention, but Grace soaked up every bit of love and kindness doled out to her. A sweet shelter volunteer took Grace home to foster her and Grace is now ready for a forever home up north through The Chi Society. She truly appreciates being rescued and is thankful for her 2nd chance. Grace is estimated to be 6-7 years old and weighs 45#. We think Grace is an Australian Shepherd mix. Grace’s foster mom says, “Grace has the heart of a puppy in a senior body. She will greet you at the end of the day with a smile, a wag of her tail, and do her best to jump up on you to tell you how happy she is to see you. She is so excited that she runs back and forth sliding all over the floor. Her smile will turn your bad day into a great one! I can't imagine the life she had before, but she is house trained and loves all dogs as well as cats. I have started fostering kittens and she just watches them. I do not crate Grace. She is not destructive, so I don’t have any reason to crate her. She doesn’t yet understand how to play with toys. Grace spends her days looking outside and napping; if it is nice out, she will lie on the deck and get some sun and she loves to run and play in the cold! She loves everyone that she meets. She would do great in any home but we think she would be happiest in a home with older children or a someone home a lot so she has company. She is very social and loving.” Please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for this angel of a dog...:) Grace - https://photos.app.goo.gl/RiF7nTUHHgzlCrXr2 Grace videos - https://youtu.be/27b8aUoaJlU and https://youtu.be/Vm9idE7_7S0 Grace is spayed, microchipped, heartworm negative, current on vaccinations, deworming and heartworm/flea prevention. All of our dogs are spayed/ neutered before adoption. Adult dogs have had their core vaccines---parvo, distemper, bordatella, and rabies, All dogs are tested and are heartworm negative. In addition they have been de-wormed and kept on heartworm prevention and flea prevention while in foster care. Most dogs come with a micr-chip already implanted. Adoption fees range from 235.00- 275.00 depending on the dog. Many times the adoption fee does not even cover the cost of all of the vetting we have done for a dog. In addition, some of our dogs are fostered in the South and come up once adopted---There is an additional transport fee for these dogs. Please contact the person listed in the bio for more information on a particular dog. We are very careful in placing our dogs--and look for the best home for each dog--All of our dogs are fostered in private homes, with fosters who get to know the dogs and know the types of home that would be best for each dog. Thank you for considering a rescued pet and we look forward to helping you find a great dog match--

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
