sweetest, most laid back beagle. I came to Last Hope after being passed around on Craig’s List, and was quite the neglected beagle. I’m probably technically special needs, but that is because of the severity of the neglect I suffered. I came to Last Hope in pretty bad shape. The great folks at Critter Crusaders took over my medical care. I had many growths on my body, a heart murmur, ear infections and bladder infections. I also had two cancerous tumors that were removed at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The doctors there say the type of cancer I had has a very low risk of returning so I did not have to undergo any further treatment such as chemotherapy. All I take now is a daily joint supplement, medicine for arthritis, and another supplement to make sure my liver enzymes stay in check. I do occasionally have accidents, but they are not a regular occurrence. My foster mom says I work really hard and do really well at letting you know I need to go outside, but sometimes overnight I can’t quite hold it. BUT, I have learned to use those silly potty pads and they’re pretty nifty. I really do love it here with my foster parents, and I know it really breaks their heart to not be able to adopt me, but we have come to a mutual agreement that I need to go to a home with NO STAIRS. I could do a few here and there, but because of my past neglect, they are tough for me. I get along great with everyone (human and fur) that I meet, including children. I am a little intimidated when meeting new men, but if they get down to my level and show me they are nice, I come around. There are cats here and I never bother them. There are two beagles here that I love to hang out in the fenced in back yard with. Oh, I can’t forget to tell you that I am deaf. This is easy to forget though because I am such a good girl and follow the lead of the other beagles here. For that reason, a home with another dog would be great. Plus I just LOVE to be outside, laying down, and smelling the air and it’s great to have company. My ideal home would be somewhere where the people are home often. I am completely fine when left alone and just sleep in my doggy bed, but now that I know people can be nice, I really do enjoy them and their company. A fenced in yard would be great as I love to just lay out and soak up the fresh air. DOGGY BEDS!!! I LOVE DOGGY BEDS!! I have one by the couch that I’m always hanging out in and another one for bedtime by my foster mom. I love to snuggle in blankets too. Please let Last Hope know if you might be a good home for me. I know I am very special to my foster parents. All of our animals are altered, heartworm-tested, and current on all vaccinations. They must be kept as indoor pets and given year-round heartworm and flea preventative. All applicants will undergo background and veterinary checks, as well as completing a home visit.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
