rfect pet! Dusty is our current golden girl beagle that has been with us before 3 years ago when she was a mere 9 years old. Coming back at this age would be tough on any dog, but in true Dusty fashion, she's taking it like a champ and making the best of her current situation while waiting for her last forever family to take her home and give her a place to live out her golden years in style. Dusty is an easy going girl that doesn't act her age. Everyone loves her! She's got a lot of living left to do and she's a happy girl that adores time outside to roll around in the grass and going on walks. She's soft as can be and would make a great cuddle partner for anyone looking to add a new pup to their bed or couch! If Dusty didn't already have a name that she knew, I would change it to happy because this girl is happy all the time! She's also a beagle, so if she wants attention and you aren't fast enough giving it to her she's going to have something to say. And like most elderly people, she's not afraid to tell you wants on her mind! She was turned in for barking and going potty in the house. But she's an old gal, who holds it a really long time in the shelter and then goes potty as soon as we take her outside, so we aren't sure what was going on in the home that made her unable to hold her potty. She would probably love to live with someone who could take her out a few times a day so she doesn't have to hold it so long, but she's going to do her best either way. Dusty is good with other dogs, it just takes her a minute to warm up to them and she's fine with cats as long as they are the type of cat that will ignore her. So, if anyone out there is looking for a classy old lady that loves life and is just waiting to have a family to enjoy it with then please stop by Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road and meet Dusty, ID# 1705-1572 in the small dog adoption room. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
