ation, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. Young and oh so sweet and loving, Precious is one of those dogs who, when given a choice of food or petting, will choose the human companionship every time. She simply adores people. All people. She enjoys playing with children, adults, and older people. She seems to sense how differently she should play with each age set and acts appropriately. It's amazing! She is a small dog, and knows it, so being a lap dog comes naturally to her. She loves to cuddle and snuggle, her favorite position being curled up right next to the nearest human, with her head on your lap or leg. She is also tremendous at understanding moods, so if her human companion feels like playing, she's up for it, but if her person is not feeling well, she will be right at your side, with a most concerned look on her face, and will sit quietly by you. Her main desire in life seems to be making her person or people happy. She would be a fantastic therapy dog. Her foster says "Precious is the most intuitive dog I've ever seen". On a straight practical line, she is house trained and has good house manners. She walks very well on the leash, no pulling. She eats carefully and slowly, savoring each bite, and takes treats gently. In fact, everything she does is gently. She will bark when someone comes to the door, and once you notice, or tell her "enough", she quits, satisfied that she has done her duty. She rides very well in the car, and loves a bucket seat, curling right up and usually going to sleep. Sometimes she sits up and looks quietly out the window. Precious is just an outstanding dog all around. Within hours of having her in your home, you will feel like she has been there always. A SPECIAL NOTE TO YOUR FROM HER FOSTER: She loves to give kisses! She very much likes her chew toys and has not bothered one single thing that isn't hers. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
