tucky, trying to find food and survive on their own and a kind advocate noticed their plight and was able to take Gracie in. If you are interested in Gracie, please let us know! "I have had Gracie in my house for a few weeks. It did not take her long to feel comfortable as she went right to the toy baskets. I have a 50 lb. springer/lab and a 3 lb. chihuahua. She gets along well with both. She loves playing with toys and laying in the sun. Gracie is very friendly with adults visiting. I had her around a toddler one time. Gracie was about a sweet as she could be; however, the child was very calm. She knows how to sit, on command, and I am working on "come." Gracie is also crate trained, if needed, and house trained. She has had no accidents in my house. Gracie has a fun personality and I've only heard her bark twice. She seems to have been socialized well. Gracie continues to be exposed to people and dogs. She has nuzzled up to all of them. Gracie has a bounce in her step all the time. She has begun to whine when she wants to go outside. That is a great cue; however, Gracie LOVES being outside, so sometimes, she may just be fooling me. It's ok because she doesn't seem to be getting into mischief and still, no accidents in the house. Gracie has learned "come" and "kennel," with no assistance from me (it took some treats to make it happen :-) ). Gracie will make a great snuggle buddy as she just loves to be loved and touched by her people! On later pictures, you will see a mark on her nose. She scraped it and we had to treat the area. It has healed up wonderfully, but left an area with no hair, for now. Rest assured, it has had no affect on her bubbly personality or her warm, friendly, and playful demeanor. Once you meet her, you will see for yourself. Training continues. Gracie knows "go away" at meal time. At my house, dogs are not allowed to be around when the people are eating. If your house is more lax, it is easy to make that allowance. She seems to be adaptable. Although she can keep up any of my activity, she can mellow out when I do. Gracie is a sweetie you have to meet." 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
