ONE OF OUR CUTEST & MOST CAUTIOUS DOGS!!! APR 17, 2017: Zippy, a 5 year old, 28 pound Heeler/Beagle (mix) is one of the cutest, most cautious dogs we have. Overwhelmed by the chaos in our shelter, she is suspicious of all new people. The best way to get her to trust you seems to be to have someone she already trusts leash her up for you the FIRST time you want her to go for a walk for you, and then you take the leash and take her out. She is especially afraid of men, so we imagine somewhere along the line a man was mean to her. After being in our shelter for a couple of weeks, she will now go up to Scott if he is sitting on the ground; she likes him. Renee leashed her up for me (Flower) the first time I took her out and it was that simple. Zippy and I walked to the sunny hillside above the parking lot where I sat down and said “Zippy Come” and she came right to my side, without hesitation, and sat down. I then began loving on her and even though her eyes were large and on guard, she enjoyed my caresses and she wanted them. I didn’t look at her, my hands just massaged her. We then walked the trail and shared affection in various places along it. The rest of the day, I kept going back to her room and putting treats down for her, and we are good friends now. Her tail wags when she sees me and she comes to me so I can leash her up. She is a precious little dog that just needs time to learn that she is safe with all of us. She even puts her little paws up on me now so she can kiss me. Zippy very much WANTS to be with other dogs and she especially likes male hounds. In the home that surrendered her to us, Zippy’s best buddy was an old male hound dog. She is more confident, now that she is roommates with our sweet, old blind dog, Lloyd. - She would do best in a home familiar with the breed of Heeler/Cattle Dog. - She needs another dog friend, a home without children, and may do best in a home with women. - She is VERY CLEAN in her room and not destructive with her soft bedding and blankets. - She loves to receive affection from people she knows and we believe she was house trained in her previous home. - She can climb fences, so whoever adopts her needs to have a good plan for getting her appropriate exercise. Zippy was also friendly with the cat in her previous home. However, she would still need proper introduction to a new cat. VOLUNTEERS and DONATIONS NEEDED. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
