eve myself outside and I continually practice my commands such as: sit, paw, fetch, stay and roll over. In between practice and my hikes, I help my foster dad train for marathons, helping him focus on his pace. In the evening it's truly time to play, and I cuddle up with my foster parents, showing them what it means to be a dog, unconditional love. This hasn't been without its challenges and I still slip up. I still don't care for people, other dogs and cars. There is just something unnatural about cars, whether I'm in riding in them or the cars driving past me. When I meet others I get nervous and bark out. I think that's the Brooklyn coming out but with patience I plan on overcoming this shortfall. I just need sometime to warm up to them. In my former life, I didn't have too much and I have difficulty giving items up. I still like to grab whatever is laying around and tend not to like to give it up easily. Like I've said I recognize my faults and I am willing to work on them, which is why I probably would not feel comfortable in a home with children or other dogs. Over the last 9 months it's been difficult and I've learned what it means to be a dog and whats truly important. It's not the award or all the treats, but the opportunity to bring love and happiness to a family. From Hunter's foster Mom: Hi my name is Hunter. Do you like long walks? How about just going for a run? Or just playing with any kind of toy? If you do then I'm the dog for you! I love to play and play and play! I'll play with any toy and I like to play fetch with a ball. However, I am learning how to properly play fetch. I do get along with other dogs but I need slow introductions. I also need to eat my food and bones away from other dogs. I don't like to share. But who does. Just a few things that you should know about me, I love to chew! I don't care what it is. I am working on my 'leave it' and will need you continue working on it. The same thing goes for 'drop it'. I am also working on not pulling while I'm out for a walk. I just love going for walks and I get so excited with all the smells that are out there. I like meeting new people but I'm a little scared when I first meet them. Because I am so hyper and I am still a puppy I would do best in a home with kids that are 10 years or older. I really am a very sweet boy and I just want to make you happy and be the best boy I can be for you. I just need a little time and patience while I get there. I am an escape artist, I know how to open the door to my pen..... So what do you think? Am I the handsome beagle/x you've always been looking for? Hunter is available through Looking Glass Animal Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We require an adoption application, reference checks and a home visit. A tax deductible adoption fee applies. All dogs are altered, vaccinated and microchipped. Please see our website for questions on our process. www.lgarinc.org

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
