for whatever reason she was released from her puppy making days at a puppy mill and was able to come stay with us for awhile until she finds you! Windy is just now experiencing grass on her feet and the ability to learn to go potty outside. She is going to need much love and guidance on your part to take this sad little dog and help her turn into more of a normal dog, she has never been nippy. She is shy, quivers at our touch, but is starting to trust us enough to look at us in our faces and wiggle her little tail. She has done nothing in her life except make babies and sit in a tiny crate just big enough to turn around in 24/7 and forced to potty immediately next to where she ate. It seems that in NYS this is perfectly acceptable to us, as residence, to allow dogs to be treated no different than chickens (some of us also feel this is very sad for the chickens). Some day maybe enough citizens will be angry enough to force a change in our laws, but for now we are here to pick up the pieces of the lucky ones that make it out alive. She will be having a dental while with us, but we want to let you know that often the teeth are so bad that this isn't a once and done expense. Windy has several mammary tumors that need to be removed. We are struggling with the cost, trying to raise the funds, or perhaps we'll find that one special human willing to adopt and give her the medical she needs. Two sweet souls came out of the mill that day and they are not as emotionally damaged as so many that have come before them, but it is still going to be a process for you with much dedication. The reward comes eventually as we promise one day your heart will jump out of your chest with the knowledge that the frightened little mill dog you adopted just looked at you with a glimmer in her eye and a wag of her tail that says she finally loves and trusts you completely! Adopting a mill dog is a journey, not one to be taken lightly, but the end result may be one of the most rewarding thing you've ever done in your life! Thank you for caring. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $200.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY. Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. If a pet is still showing, it is still available for adoption. Can't Adopt Me? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
