A Little History Lesson on this pup:
Eleven hounds were found in the Suffolk area abandoned, without food, water, or shelter. Two of the hounds were pregnant – in addition to being infested with worms, mange, and covered in urine scald. One of mothers was severely injured – to the point she could not stand. Understandably, these creatures were fearful of everything, having been utterly disappointed by their humans.
Thankfully, a Pungo community of hunters, animal owners and lovers, Villa Lobos, and concerned citizens banded together to ensure the safety and well-being of these hounds. In addition to an abundance of donated dog food, fresh eggs, and other supplies, the residents contributed in excess of $1000 for necessities and much needed FHO surgery*.
With the successful intervention of so many people working together, fourteen puppies were born at Big Sky Farms, where they were weaned and were placed in loving homes so that the mommas could continue their recovery.
Eleven of those pups (female) were placed in foster homes through Fur-Ever Home Rescue at six weeks of age. These little angels have known nothing but kindness and love from dozens of caring people – animal owners, friendly neighbors, hunting enthusiasts, and social media followers. Without the combined effort of so many people, their story would be much different.
*“A femoral head osteotomy, also referred to as a femoral head ostectomy or FHO, is the surgical removal of the head and neck of the femur. In simpler terms, it is the removal of the “ball” part of the ball-and-socket that makes up the hip joint. This way, the bones of the joint are no longer in contact, which eliminates the pain that is caused by the abnormal contact of the bones.” Source: http://www.topdoghealth.com/library/orthopedic-surgery/articles-surgery/femoral-head-osteotomy-fho-dogs/
Black and Tan Coonhound Information:
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a breed of dog used primarily for trailing and treeing raccoons. It is a cross between the Bloodhound and the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound. This breed has an incredible sense of smell, is adaptable, easygoing, even-tempered, gentle, lovable, and trusting – all incredible qualities favored by hunters. Breeding for purpose over aesthetics (per the strict PKC behavior rules) has eliminated many physical issues other large dogs suffer, like hip dysplasia.
