l love and adore her. She has been in an awesome foster home and has really blossomed over the last month. Her foster shares: "Amber is a loving happy pup who bonds quickly and closely to her humans. Give her some time to get to know you and she will give you her whole heart. She is affectionate, enjoys being petted and told how pretty she is. Amber's improvements have been vast. She is becoming a confident, loving, affectionate, playful dog. When she first arrived she was freightened of every new thing often making her run to her crate for safety. What time she spent crate free, she would pace and seem to freet. Now she seems much more relaxed and spend much of her crate free time chilling with the family, enjoying her toys and she likes to watch TV too. Amber is a smart girl, eager to please and a quick study. She has learned several commands including come, sit, stay, leave it and down. She is crate and leash trained and house broken too. She is playful and friendly with friendly dogs and cats but can be jealous and pushy when sharing her people with other dogs. At the rugby game this weekend, after a slow introduction, she socialized nicely with other people. (Beware... she is very frightened of people wearing ball caps and sunglasses.) Amber is a love and each day in every way, she is growing to be a happy, confident pup. She is going to make a loving and devoted family pet to some lucky family." Amber is an active pup who would enjoy and excel in most training and performance sports like agility, obedience, rally, flyball, to name a few—what fun for the both of you! Looking for a fun bonding experience for you and your new fur-iend? Be sure to pick up a copy of "101 Dog Tricks" and have fun teaching her how to high five, jump through hoops, army crawl or even skateboard. Amber would make a fun jogging and hiking partner as well. She is always up for an adventure and would love a home with an active adult who takes her on fun excursions like hiking, camping, boating or just lunch at the local park. She would do fine as an only pup soaking up the attention for herself. She would enjoy a home with a fenced in yard and a friendly resident pup who can put up with her jealousy and pushy manner when it comes to snuggle time with the family. Amber is a great dog deserving of a wonderful, loving, experienced dog guardian that will help her continue to grow to be the amazing dog she was meant to be. If that's you, come meet her soon. AMBER is spayed, heart worm negative and up to date on age appropriate vaccines. Adoption fee is $400. Visit our website WWW.LULUSRESCUE.ORG for an overview of Lulu's Rescue adoption and foster processes. Please note that training is highly recommended for all dogs. As with all rescue animals, breed determination cannot be validated without genetic testing. Thanks for adopting and saving a life -- you are AMBER'S hero.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
