ays I have a million dollar smile, but I prefur that to be a million doggie biscuit smile, because that sounds way more valuable to me. Hey…maybe I should audition for a Greenies commercial. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR NAME? Whelp, that is no mystery…get it, mystery, Scooby Doo, is this thing on? *as he taps the mic* I have both the charisma and movie star good looks, so they named muah after the big brown famous fido Scooby Doo. It was between that and Teddy Graham because I am brown like a graham cracker and loving like a teddy bear. WHAT IS YOUR BEST MOVE TO GET PEOPLE TO LOVE YOU? Big bear hugs while slurping on your cheek. Hint…if I really like you, your ear will get a nibble too. WHAT KIND OF TEMPERAMENT DO YOU HAVE? No m’am I don’t carry any mints, I am a dog, no pockets and your breath smells fine to me anyway….did you have bacon on your sammich today, I think I am catching whiffs of bacon undertones….. SORRY, TO CLARIFY I AM ASKING ABOUT YOUR PERSONALITY? Ahhh, then why didn’t you just say that. My personality is the kind that you want to put in the center of attention. Foster Mommy says I have lots of extra verts and make friends every where I go. Plus people say “What a well behaved doggie and handsome too”. Yes, people say that. Then I bear hug them and slurp them and if they are lucky, the ear nibbling ensues. WHAT IS YOUR AGE, WEIGHT AND BREED? Unlike the blundering Great Dane that played the actual Scooby, I am a Houndy type mix and will only grow to be about pounds, right now I am 9 months and pounds of lovey dovey goodboyness. ANY TRAINING SKILLS? I am learning the normal yada yada people stuff like potty training. I wake my Foster Mommy up when nature calls in the morning and she takes me out every 3 hours when she is home to remind me to tinkle. I have a born natural skill of leash following. Seriously, I will walk right by your side or slightly behind. Foster Mommy says this is amazeballs because she has never ever seen a pup my age and energy that knew naturally how to stay calm on the leash. WHAT KIND OF HOME DO YOU WANT? umber one is a home with people in it. I love being with people and a house is not a home without the people in it. My own bed…yes…they actually make beds just for doggies, I never had one when I was a stray so I think wow…this is the coolest. A yard for ball chase and zoomies is really a must have and Foster Mommy says “he is defurnitely not an apartment doggie”…I think she is making a eufurmism for “This guy has lots of the energy”. DO YOU GET ALONG WITH OTHER DOGS? Yes, I add lots of friends to my collection. I never met a butt I didn’t want to sniff. Other dogs can join me in my favorite hobbies like wading in the kiddie pool or playing fetch. Or just waggin our tail because we got the joy joy joy down in our hearts…..(excuse us while Scooby breaks into a chorus of song….) 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
