re I was used for breeding and never allowed to live in a house. When I arrived to Canada I was so scared and hid in my crate for weeks, was pretty sick and just exhausted from my previous life. Thankfully, my foster parents were patient with me; they taught me how to live in a house (especially using those pesky stairs), how to walk on a leash, enjoy my dinner without fear, know what it’s like to have a cozy bed and make friends with people that come to visit, my foster siblings and other area dogs – I’m a real star around the neighbourhood! The wonderful rescue has helped me though a few health hiccups, even making sure I received the ACL surgery I needed. My little knee is as good as new, meaning I’m ready for long walks around the neighbourhood or trails – I LOVE my walks! Just please remember, I can NEVER be off-leash, but do LOVE my 20’ training leash when going for long walks on trails…oh the things I can sniff on those trails! I’m still working on my fear of males; I’m simply not confident around men and it takes a while for me to trust them. There are certain things males do that trigger my fear and set me back; the sound of an opening pop or beer can terrify me, so please just open them in a different room, or loud sounds of yelling or talking; I know you’re likely just excited watching that hockey game, but it makes me really scared. I am looking for a special home. I need someone who will be patient with me as we work together through my fears and training. I’m very timid at first and it might take me some time to trust. I’m good when left alone, but really love my human companions the most. I am the cutest naturally and know it too! Once you get to know my sassy personality, I’ll have you in stitches laughing non-stop! If you’re looking for a snuggle or walking buddy, I just might be your girl because I’m looking for my forever home. Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. Filling out our application does not obligate you to adopt in any way. It does, however, help us to determine if the dog that your interested in would be a good match for your family and lifestyle. All of our dogs are fully vetted. They have been vaccinated, altered, microchipped and heartworm tested and on prevention. VISIT COONHOUND COMPANIONS WEBSITE TO SEE WHY ADOPTING A COONHOUND CAN BE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! www.coonhoundcompanions.com ADOPTION FEE: $400.00 LOCATION: Ladybug is currently in foster care in Toronto, ON. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
