Meet Domino, a friendly 8 month-old Border Collie/Lab mix pup who loves life and certainly isn’t letting the fact that he was homeless at a rural county dog shelter get him down. We don’t know what circumstances led to him ending up in a shelter but it’s likely that he was largely left to fend for himself as he was very shy and had no idea what a leash was for when he first came to us. Domino is a quick study though and comes out of his shell quickly when he knows that someone wants to be his friend. After a few days of trying to get a handle on leash walking, Domino does quite well with it now. Although it’s likely that he may have spent much of his life living outdoors, he has done very well with crate-training in his foster home. He has not had a single accident in his crate and will run right to the door to go outside once he’s let out of his crate. Domino learns new routines quickly. It’s going to be a lot of fun for his new family to watch him relax and settle into his new home. His playful puppy personality will keep his family entertained. As he matures and learns lots of new things, Domino is going to become an outstanding companion. Domino LOVES playing with other dogs so we would like to see him go to a home where he will have a playful canine pal. Domino weighs about 39 pounds now but will likely be about 50 pounds or so once full grown. His adoption fee is $250. He’s neutered, heartworm negative and on monthly preventative, up to date on vaccinations including bivalent canine influenza, wormed, on flea and tick preventative, and microchipped. As part of the adoption process, all adopters must commit to a two-week adjustment period to make sure it’s a great match before the adoption is finalized. Please email infocaninelifeline if you’re interested in Domino. An approved application is required before we schedule meets with any of our dogs. We have no foster homes with young children so aren’t comfortable placing any of them in a home with children less than 7 years of age. We try to respond to inquiries within 72 hours so if you haven’t heard from us within that time frame, please check your junkmail or spam folder to make sure our reply hasn’t landed in there. Please visit our website at .caninelifeline to see more photos of Domino and to submit an online application.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
