3.5 year old Border Collie, weighing 45 lbs. He has reached his adult weight and height. This guy has my respect. I pulled him from a high kill shelter in San Antonio, Texas when he was almost 3 months old. He was very emaciated and his rear leg had with a bone sticking out and broken in several places. Someone had abused him. But Scooter was still happy and loved to be held and his sprits had not been broken. He has been a trooper from day one, never making a sound even though he was in a lot of pain. Even though his leg was so bad; the vet considered amputation but decided to watch the bones heal. They leg healed but he has a limp that doesn’t stop him from running and jumping. His room is upstairs and he bounces up the stairs all the time. And he loves for me to play chase with him in the backyard. His complete medical records and x-rays will come with him at the time of adoption. Someone else named him early on but his name Scooter so deserves, he is a SCOOTER. He only barks when he is talking to you or to alert me that someone is near our gate in the backyard. He bounces around still like a puppy and just a very happy guy. He gets along with everyone. Scooter will let a dog cuddle with him, eat out of his bowl and share his toys. To sum Scooter up, he is just a fun loving guys who smiles all the time and gives you love every day. You cannot help but smile back at him and laugh because he sits there with a goofy grin on his face looking at you until you do smile and tell him something good. This is the type of dog that you want to come home to, he is a best friend best buddy pal for sure. He has a beautiful black wavy coat and he does not tend to shed with regular baths, he will sit still for a bath, then he goes and takes a long nap. J There is nothing better to Scooter than having his head scratched and getting some attention from him human. And a rawhide, he chews on them and plays with them! He is not demanding and very low maintenance. He eats regular dry food but he watches to see if you might share your food with him!!!! While he has been in my care, he has helped heal the soul of other rescue dogs brought into my home that didn’t have the best start in life. Scooter just seems to know what is going on. His best friend was another bigger white border collie who only has 3 legs. Bradley was hit by a car. Scooter instantly took to him and became his hearing dog and totally took care of Bradley. Sadly Bradley got adopted and Scooter has been searching for another best buddy. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
