se call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I may be a little older, but I sure don’t act like it. I’m active, curious, love to meet and greet new people and I’m sweet too! I love taking walks with my people and have improved greatly with my special walking harness, yay me! For now, I should just take nice calm walks. You see, my previous owners didn’t keep me current on Heart Worm prevention, so I have HW’s. The good news is that due to my age, the slow kill method will be best for me, which is easily done at home with a treat each month. Yum!! (Just ask for more about that if you think I’d make a nice addition to your family). I am working on doggie skills in the Mostly Mutts University training program, and I have already mastered ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, and ‘drop it’! I like car rides and can be a little like a jumping bean, so keep me secured in the car or perhaps the non-driver can sit with me and hold my leash. I’m also sweet and loving as well as a great house guest and past the age of chewing things, etc. My potty manners have been very good on the shelter schedule and I’ve been well behaved in my large crate too. If you have another dog at home, let’s meet and see if we can be good friends! I’ve liked several of the other dogs I’ve met at MM’s, though not all. I got into a scuffle with another dog once when we were both off leash. I don’t recall how it started, but I’ve met several dogs since then and done well. I also shouldn't live with cats, I recently went home with a volunteer for a few days and met their kitty and we didn't get along. I barked and went after her, and she didn't like that very much. You’ll love my easygoing, gentle and loving nature as well as my get up and go for a walk spirit. I’m not a big fan of being touched when eating, as most dogs aren’t, so I may give a growl, but that’s the only thing I’ve done while at the MM facility. One of the nice volunteers has taken me home for sleepovers a few times and she has never witnessed this growling behavior, even when purposely testing me while I was eating, so it may just be brought on by the stress of the shelter and having lots of other dogs nearby while I'm eating. I’ve been kid tested with the trainer's 10-year-old son who really knows dogs and I did very well with him, though I haven’t met many kids, so I think that a home with older respectful kids will be best due to my reaction to some other dogs and possibly wanting to eat alone. Energy level: 4-6. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, spayed and my adoption fee is $275.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
