down for this…not for treat, but becuz this story is long and you will get tired… The boogieman is not real. Neither is the toof fairy, but that is a story for another day. When I was a baby I would scream in the middle of the night, it was not the boogieman under my pillow, but there was defurnitely a monster. The monsters weren’t under the bed and Foster Mommy and Daddy couldn’t make them go away no matter how many cuddles they put on me. The monster was distemper and it was inside me. My rescue story starts all the way in Corpus Christi, Texas, where me and my sibs were left at a shelter at just 3 days old. There was an invisible boogie monster lurking in our bodies and my sister Athena was the furst one to show the clues. She would spin in circles. The Foster Mommies and Daddies were hoping she was just blind, that would be easy, but nope, it was distemper. Athena and Selena lived and were adopted, two of my brothers are in heaven now, and now I am AVAILABLE. Back to how I beat the monsters…it was not easy in the beginning stages. I would scream in my sleep, I had terrible tremors and would drag myself to eat, to get water and to potty. Yep, it was really bad and many times the rescue ladies discussed the e-word…bad word…because they didn’t want me suffering. I did not want to be e-worded…I had stuff to do, toys to steal, pillows to burrow in, besties to play with, ladies to kiss. Each time I had a bad epawsode and they thought putting me to sleep would be better, I would wake up the next morning stronger than ever showing them that I had a fighter’s heart. I would beat that distemper monster. And I did, so I am here to tell you about it. I started physical therapy/rehabilitation at Westridge Wellness Animal Hospital in late October 2017. They are miracle workers and had helped a paralyzed dog, Survivor, learn to walk again. Move over Survivor because there is a new Rock Star in town. I get gold stars on all my homework. I want to eat my homework too, but Foster Mommy won’t let me, so I ate her rubber door mat instead…shhhh... I blamed the big dogs. I completed my sessions and need custom made braces for my front legs because my front legs don’t always coopawrate with my brain and I have malfurmation of my ankles, ligaments and tendons on my front paws. I am turning the big ONE on March 28th and weigh 33 lbs, even though I am a Boxer/Lab mix, I won’t get big like my sisters, the distemper stunted my growth, but it did NOT stunt my handsome… I hit 100% on the handsomes. I had to legally tell you all that distemper stuff, so you know what you are getting into if you adopt me, but seriously, I am just a regular guy at heart. I LOVE "running" around the backyard with my big Boxer brothers and Golden mix sissie. I launch myself back into the house and promptly grab any in my path. Other than Foster Mommy reminding me that I am a warrior that beat the distemper monster, I am not different than any other 1 year old dog in my heart. The distemper left me with a lack of tooth enamel, so that will need to be fixed as I get older, but it did not leave me with a lack of urge to chew on stuff. Like any other self respectable pup my age, I like to exercise my chompers, may I recommend buying me lots of sturdy toys to protect your human decor. Foster Mommy says “He certainly needs a family who can COMMIT AND UNDERSTAND HIS LIFELONG NEEDS.” All caps means she wants you to hear that part loud and clear. Me and my Foster Fam have been through ups and downs over the past year and I am so thankful to them. I hope they know it! Foster Mommies and Daddies are the real Rock Stars. I was all blah, blah distemper… I furget to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE PEOPLE AND OTHER DOGS!!!! I would prefer a family with at least one other dog as I need the companionship and they teach me lots. I also want a family who has no silly rules like “no dogs on couch”. Ugh, that would be silly. I can climb stairs, but you will need to help me onto the couch. My theme song is You've Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story and I pawmise you will have a friend in me fur infinity and beyond. Please email Adoptions@Godsdogsrescue.org and tell them you want ME!! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
