a lot of love to give that special someone. She is good with male dogs...she is NOT good with cats. She is also good with kids. Lucy can jump a 4' fence. She will do best in a home as an only dog, a home with a male dog and/or a home that will keep her socialized with other dogs :) She is a very loving and cuddly girl. 4/15 UPDATE: Lucy is back with the rescue. She will need slow and proper intros with a resident dog. In her life before rescue, Lucy was hurt by other dogs so she is slow to warm up and trust new four-legged friends. Once she feels safe and secure she is fine. Lucy has a fairly high prey drive and would do best at a home with a fenced in yard. Like all young Boxers, Lucy is in need of mental and physical exercise, structure and routine to help her be the best girl she can be. She is fantastic with kids and she loves to play, play, play! FROM LUCY'S FOSTER MOM: Lucy is a vibrant young lady. She currently is living it up in downtown St Paul. And has become used to the sounds and movements of the city, including: elevators, traffic, construction, police cars, fire engines, bicyclists, and people on the street. In fact, she LOVES people and making new human friends! Each day Lucy and her foster momma take a few strolls around the capital grounds and visit with friends. New folks want to say hi because she’s always smiling. The only time she skips long walks is when it rains; Lucy’s not a real big fan of rain, especially when thunder booms are involved. When Lucy came to her current foster momma she was a bit out of control. It seemed that in her last home she didn’t have much structure or many rules; but that’s all changed. Lucy is walking nicely on her lead and learning that not everything moving needs her undivided attention. Other dogs are still interesting; but now she’s able to keep on her way (except when squirrels and bunnies are concerned). She’s very nervous about dogs she doesn’t know and only has a few “boyfriends.” Other girl dogs don’t seem to be her cup of tea. She’s even learning that the crate isn’t all that bad either; actually, it’s a great place to snooze on blankets and pillows when humans aren’t around. Though Lucy was a bit anxious when she first arrived in St Paul, she’ll become quite the couch potato after a long walk. When she enjoys maybe a short game of fetch before cuddling up on a couch. Lucy would be great as a only fur-child and would thrive with a human, or family of humans, who would have time to be around for her and continue training.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
