&#;t afford to treat. She is completely vetted and had surgery for a hematoma on her ear. UPDATE FROM STELLA&#;S FOSTER MOM: Stella is doing great. I leave her out during the day. She is a talker. She lets me know when she is not getting the attention she wants...she climbs on my lap and paws and talks to me :) Stella has been fine with both dogs and cats here. She has been wrestling with Lance (young Boxer) and my Pittie Blaze. She is fine with all the little dogs. I feed separate, since she is on special food. Stella also knows the commands for "sit" and "shake". THE LATEST!! Stella is amazing! She is completely housebroken and when she has to go, she will let you know it by making adorable wookiee rooing sounds. She is wonderful and quiet when she is crated, she will lay on her blanket and snooze. In the house, Stella is pretty good. She is not destructive, and we have not seen any of the counter surfing that was previously mentioned. Stella is happy to lay on a blanket on the floor, or up on the couch with her people, and she will definitely sleep in your bed if you let her. Stella is awesome riding in the car and seems to enjoy tooling around. She has been a great walking/running partner, too! She is pretty strong and pulls hard on a leash, but we are using a slip lead harness on her and she will loose leash walk on it. Stella has been fantastic with the cat in the house, as well as our small female dog. She is nervous about larger dogs and they need to be super friendly and amiable for her to trust them, but she’s had several play pals that she got along great with. Toys are one of Stella’s great loves! Stuffed Kongs, squeaky toys, crinkle toys, she loves them all. But tugging is by far her favorite activity! While she loves playing with toys, she is very strong and can get pretty intense and pushy when she’s playing. She doesn’t always remember that she’s so big and strong! Stella takes treats gently, which is handy since she suffers from some allergies and will need to remain on a couple of medications for the rest of her life. She takes them easily in a piece of ham or a treat. Stella is wonderfully independent and is happy to keep herself busy with a Kong or a nap, but she is also very attached to her people and is always down to snuggle up for a movie on the couch. She is naturally protective of her home and people and will alert bark if someone comes in or knocks on the door. Stella knows how to sit, shake, lay down, come, and she will wait very nicely for you to put down her food/water bowl. Oh, and she loves baths! She looks big and tough, but she’s really just a big marshmallow.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
