ike with me, look down. Picture my face right there at your feet. My name is Petey and I will never be far away. Your days of going potty by yourself are over. Going to the fridge? I think it is better if we go as a pair. Going for a walk? Going together is a far better idea and I will gladly walk next to you. You won’t even know I am there! I can entertain myself, but doing things together is much more fun! My energy level is moderate. I am a bit of a nervous fella. Walks help me relax so I can be as patient in my crate as you need me to be. You will be happy to know I come with some pretty awesome basic obedience skills. I am treat motivated so training me is a breeze. I desperately want to please you. Teach me the rules and I will follow them. Learning new things make me happy and help build my confidence. The sky is the limit with me! I have been around cats and have done well. I am dog selective. What does this mean? It means I can’t play or live with just any dog. You can never skimp when trying to find the right roommate. It takes me longer to warm up to new dogs, but once I do, I am a friend for life. I require slow introductions and prefer friends who are gentle in nature. The dog friends I like the most never stare me down or try to dominate me. Those types make my nerves rattle. Since I am so picky about new friends, dog parks are not for me but, on leash walks are right up my alley and I enjoy them immensely! My favorite toys include stuffies of all kinds. Soft toys are so much fun to shake and shake, throw and shake. I am good at fetch for about one throw. I am down for tug-o-war if you think you can handle this mean, lean tugging machine. I play a good game of tug, but I will let you win from time to time just to keep things on the level. Although I like to play, I like the lighter side of life too. Cuddling and kisses are equally enjoyable. In my three short years I have had a rough go of things. I have so much to offer someone who will protect, love and comfort me. I need a little bit of care and guidance and I will give you my whole heart for all the rest of my days. To see me in action, watch my video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoDdCCcv7zY&t=70s. You won’t be able to resist me after this, I guarantee it! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
