good. My foster mom calls me Sweet Boy but that doesn’t really go well with the Eye of the Tiger song. I come from the streets of the big city of Portland, but I'm liking my temporary suburban digs. My human dad and I were homeless, but you would never know it. He took such good care of me. He taught me well, and best of all, loved me to pieces. He got really sick and couldn't keep me anymore, so here I am! My foster mom says I'm a "good boy" and am going to make my furever family very happy. I don't know about all that, but I do know that I love to be with my people. When I came into the rescue everyone was so impressed with my manners, and bathroom training, and demeanor. It was hard for them to believe I had been on the streets for so long but my human dad was pretty amazing and always made me feel loved. I was super excited to make the acquaintance of my foster fur-sister. When you are homeless, you don’t have these things called fenced in back yards but HOLY COW. Being off leash and getting to play with her! We have a lot of fun running zoomies and playing in the yard. Mom says she is going to tell you all about me, but I wanted to tell you the most special thing myself. Brace yourself. Here it is. I have a tail! Yes, you read that right. Not just a wigglin' nub either. It's an actual tail with a really cool curl. Think of Rocky’s grey sweatshirt hoodie; it’s cool like that. Now that that's out in the open, I will let mom gush about me now! Ok, my turn. I can't say enough good things about Rocky. He is very sweet and gentle. He and our female hit it off right away. When our male tried to show some aggression towards him, he did not react at all. He is incredibly dog friendly. He walks on a leash beautifully, and crates well. He does whine a bit, but will stop. I have rarely heard him bark. The doggie door is a little scary, but we are working on it. He has mid-level energy and it would do him good to have an active owner and/or a fur-sibling to run around with. He is smitten with my husband and that may be because he has spent the last five years, 24 hours a day, with his male owner. He does want to be with you most of the time, so it may be good for him to find a family that is home more than not. At least until he gets used to being more independent. If you're on the fence about getting a new family member, do not hesitate with this one. You will never regret taking in this wonderful boy. You've seen a great deal posted about this boy over the last few days, now he is completely ready for meet and greets. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
