APPY BOY all the time and has the best personality. An "absolute pleasure" she says. He does fabulous with other dogs and we believe he would be good with kids as well, as he has the best personality and loves everyone and everything, but we are not sure about cats Mikey had surgery as he was having some problems with his ACL but upon opening up his knee, the vet discovered his ACL was fine but he had some arthritis build up and therefore he "cleaned up" the scar tissue in his knee and removed it. We do recommend that Mikey be on some kind of a joint supplement for the rest of his life, as his arthritis may someday come back in the knee and we just want his joints to stay as lubricated as possible. He has also been treated for Lymes disease as his blood tests came back positive. Mikey got word that he is now ready to be adopted and he wanted to say something to his new family, so here is a message from Mikey................... Hi guys, my name is Mikey. It’s been a crazy couple of months for me! I was found as a stray in Ohio and was taken to this place filled with lots of dogs and cats. The people there kept telling me my time was almost up because they kept bringing in more and more dogs and didn’t have a lot of room for me or my friends. My foster mom from Great Lakes Boxer Rescue saw my picture and fell in love. I mean, who wouldn’t? I’m handsome! The first night I saw her, I knew I was safe and fell right asleep in her arms. I spent about a month with my foster mom before I headed to another place with lots of dogs and cats. This place was different… they were going to help my knee feel better! This man in a white coat told me that I had a lot of arthritis (whatever that means) in my back left knee. He cleaned it all out and now I feel soooo much better! I will need to eat some yummy pills every day for my knees so they stay healthy but it’s ok, it’s not expensive and I eat them like a champ! When I was there, they poked me with a needle and took some red stuff from me. That man in the white coat also said I have Lymes disease. The good thing about that is a very low percentage of dogs show any signs of it and I happy to not show any either! I love my life with my foster mom. She has two other dogs. One of my foster sisters is bigger than me and the other is smaller. I like both of them very much. I play with them a little but more than anything, I love snuggling them. I go to my foster grandma’s house every day and hang out with her two tiny dogs, my two foster sisters and these tiny people. I absolutely love the tiny people!! Even though I’m a big guy, I know to slow down and be gentle with them. I approach them slowly… except for my nubb, that thing is going crazy! I haven’t met anyone or anything I haven’t absolutely loved. Coming from the hours that were ticking on my clock to now, I don’t have a single reason to not love everyone and everything about life. My foster mom is always telling me that I’m the best foster dog she’s EVER had! I don’t doubt that… I’m beautiful, gentle, charming, super low maintenance, very chill (nothing bothers me) sleep allllll through the night and am the sweetest boxer there ever was. I’m also crate trained but I prefer a dog bed while you run your errands. I can be alone for house in the house and not make any kind of mess! Did I tell you I’m handsome? I have a big, boxery, squishy face and super long legs. Most people think I’m all white until I turn around and surprise them with a brindle spot on my butt. It’s adorable. I also have selective hearing… my mom tells me I’m a typical male… not sure what that means. I think a fence would be neat to have so I can wonder around and smell everything… I love smells! When I’m not snoring… which I do a lot… I love toys!! All toys! Stuffed toys, squeaky toys, toys with treats in them… I will even play with toys with my foster sisters. It’s ok if they grab them from me… I don’t mind. Like what you read? Fill out an application so you can meet me! I PROMISE you won’t regret it. Everyone who meets me falls in love with me. I’m ready for a home of my own and a forever family so that I can give them all the love that I have. He has been neutered, is current on his vaccinations, heartworm negative and has been treated for internal parasites. He is housebroken, crate trained and is microchipped. His adoption fee is $300

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
