at I am 5 years old but I don't feel like I ever got past being a puppy! I look at the world through a puppy's eyes. For some reason, my puppyhood was a blur and I never got to learn much about the world. And now it's awkward because I have this 85 pound body! All I really want is to please my owner. Show me what you want and I'll give you my best try. I listen really well. I know a lot of commands and I try to be as gentle as I can all the time. Although, like any puppy I do get excited and I will bounce around. I'll listen to clear commands to calm down! I can sit, stay, shake, and come. I crate perfectly, but don't really need to because I don't make messes. This also means that I am fully house trained. I can wait for you to let me out or even better if you have a doggie door! I share food well, and I am SO gentle when I take treats from your hand. I love to play with toys. I can play with them by myself – put them on the ground and roll all over them – or you and me can play together. I like to run and chase the toys and bring them back. Then there's walks! I love going on walks so much I'll spin in circles with excitement. I'm usually well behaved on walks. Sometimes things are SO INTERESTING I have to go check it out and I forget that you're still holding the leash. But keep gently reminding me that you don't like that. The more we walk the better I get. I will let you love me all you want. You can hug me, kiss me, and give me scratches! I really like face, ear and head massages. I will gently place my big paw on your lap to let you know you can keep scratching. Also, you don’t have to worry if you are sitting in my spot on the couch. we can share the same spot! After you give me permission to come up, I will just collapse right on top of you for a nap. Though my Foster Dad doesn’t have kids my previous owner says I’m good with them. Foster Dad does have other dogs and we all play really well together. But if the other dog is really dominant, I may get scared and go into protection mode. You will need to keep things in check until we both figure things out. My instinct is to be overly protective at first. I bark, not all the time, but at certain noises or when people come to the door. It is my job to keep everyone safe. If you tell me that it's all ok and you've got this, then I calm down pretty quick and will follow your lead. Note from Foster Dad- This boy has had it really rough and yet he still responds beautifully to love. Once you show him a little, you will have won his heart, and it takes only a moment for him to win yours. He is sweet, playful, and a wonderfully behaved boy. If I didn’t have other dogs, I would claim this goofy love bear as my own. Thinking you might like to open your home to this big lovable guy? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
