name is Chaz. I am from California and I am so happy to be a member of NWBR. My past was not the brightest, and I have quite a few scars to show from it, but I am very brave and resilient! But, despite a rough past I am as kind and sweet as can be, a true gentle spirit. There are four other dogs here and we all get along famously. I am easy-going, sometimes playful, and friendly around other dogs once I get to know everyone. I have been with my foster family for the last few months and they are helping me learn to trust again. It will take some time for me, but foster Mom says I am so very worth it. I am a sweet, quiet boy except for a rare bark or two to get your attention or if someone comes to the door. I love nothing more than to curl up on the sofa with a soft lap to lay my head on and take a snooze. One of my very favorite things to do is climb up on your lap and let you pet me. I will stay there as long as you like. In fact, foster Mom thinks I would make an excellent therapy dog because of my chill temperament. I also love to cuddle next to my fur brothers and sisters on the many dogs beds here. I haven’t met a human that I didn’t like. I love when company comes over, and I am very well behaved. Foster Mom says everyone loves me. I love kids of all ages - you don't need to worry about that - but sometimes when I get to boxing around I forget my size, so an older child or teenager would be best for me as I continue to adjust to family life and learn to build trust. I am house trained and my foster Mom says I catch on to routines super-fast! I am crate trained too, but it’s not my favorite thing unless I am crated next to one of my fur buddies. Otherwise, I have done pretty well just staying out of my crate for an hour or two without any trouble. We are working on my commands, too; I know sit and down. I really enjoy going for pack walks with foster Mom, Dad, and fur siblings. Mom says I am pretty good on the leash unless something catches my eye, like a bird, and then I will give a good pull. But, I am easily redirected. Can’t blame a dog for trying with all these interesting creatures. While walking I love to stop, sniff and smell the roses along the way. I would love to have a home with another canine companion similar to me in temperament to keep me company and teach me the ropes. I need a secure, fenced yard to keep me safe and sound on my occasional trips outside with you. I want a family that will protect me in new-to-me circumstances, that are looking for a snuggly cuddle buddy, and that don’t mind me in their laps. A family that is home more often than not, has lots of patience, and that will love me unconditionally would be perfect. If that is you, please go to www.nwboxerrescue.org and fill out your application so we can meet. Love Chaz. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
