area. I came to CCR from a owner relinquishment in Denver. CCR believes that I might be a Boxer/German Wirehair breed mix (just a guess by shelter and vet personnel) and I am approximately 7-8 years old. My foster parents tell me I have a kooky personality, maybe it has something to do with my mohawk and big underbite. I am a sweet boy with people, although I have not been around a lot of kids. Since I am starting to enjoy my senior years, I prefer not to share my humans and would need to be the only dog in the house. I do well with cats, I don't even notice they're around until there rubbing against me. I am crate trained and walk well on a leash. I am also trained to use the dog door in my foster's house and will need to go to a home with a yard. I love to go for car rides and hang out with my people. I like to go into the hardware stores because the workers give me treats! I do like to chase the squirrels on the fence (but I think that they are there for my enjoyment because they tease me). In the house I love to stare out the door or windows at the wildlife (squirrels, birds, bunnies, deer), but I don't like those pesky raccoons, don't worry I will keep the yard safe from them. I have been known to be a barker and know what a bark collar is. I sleep on a big comfy dog bed next to yours at night and will only get on the bed if you tell me it is ok. I take treats extra gentle and love fruits and vegetables. I love to chew on dog bones, and play with some toys. I like to go for walks and hikes, I like to play in the water and have been fishing in the mountains. I have been on a boat and love to have the wind just blow through my hair. Truman will do best with an experienced dog owner/handler. If you are interested in adopting Truman, please submit an adoption application located on our website, coloradocaninerescue. We are asking for a $200 adoption donation. He is neutered, housebroken, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped. Please note, CCR cannot guarantee the breed composition or ages of our dogs as we usually have no history prior to them entering the shelter. In addition, most dogs listed as potty trained will experience an adjustment period as they learn the routines in their new home.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
