PRINCESSA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Princessa Best Guess for Breed: Plott hound/boxer mix Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of March 2019 SEX: female Approximate Weight: 49 lbs. as of March 3, 2019 Gets along with: other dogs Currently Living at: DC area foster home Check out this video of Princessa: youtu.be/U_1olktUEVA. Princess is looking for: She is ready to join her new family just in time for summer! She would look great walking next to you through the city while you find an outdoor brunch spot, would love a doggie beach trip, or maybe help tire the kids out in the backyard. She gets along well with other dogs so she would fit in well with an existing pack, or could be an only child and soak up all the attention. Princessa is a young girly who will need A LOT of exercise to keep her happy and healthy. Once she is nice and tuckered out from all that action, she will surely love to curl up and enjoy quiet time and cuddles! She would also greatly benefit from obedience school where she can master the techniques of being a good girl! Whatever your lifestyle, Princessa just wants to be a part of it! What the foster says about me: Princessa has been an absolute joy to have in our home. She is house trained, food motivated and incredibly sweet. She absolutely LOVES fetch (especially tennis balls) and chewing on sturdy toys like bones, antlers and rope toys. She is excellent with other dogs off leash and very playful. She has successfully hiked with us at Harpers Ferry, taken trips to the dog park and had play dates with friend's dogs. She sleeps beautifully in her crate at night and loves going to daycare. She has a tendency to jump when excited so we are working on that (she wants to hug and kiss everyone!) and she already knows sit, touch and focus. Princessa is a wonderful companion and we hope she meets her forever family soon! Like most shelter dogs, Princessa may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. To adopt: The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
