t a wonderful companion he is! Brasco is house-trained, does very well in his crate and enjoys a good snooze while he's there. He will joyfully jump in and adorably wait for a treat. He's a master on his leash or harness, and knows several commands. He understands "heel and will always walk next to you when you ask him to. Brasco will patiently sit and wait for his food to be set down, never jumps on the furniture, and is very well behaved. He really is an awesome pooch! He likes to take his time in getting comfortable with new people before he shows much affection. Once he's there though, he is the cuddle king! He wants very much to be a tiny lap dog, and really commits to it sometimes. It's pretty hilarious to watch him try! This sweet pooch will lovingly put his paw on your knee when he's sitting next to you, and loves belly rubs! Once you've won this guy over he really is the epitome of respectful, loving, and eager. This goofy dog adores his tennis balls, and will happily chase them around the yard! He will also lope around the house carrying and squeaking it trying to see if anyone is up for some tug of war. When it's time to go for a walk, this fella is 100% all in! This active guy also adores car rides. He will proudly sit in the back seat as though he's the coolest pup in town! This respectful guy would do wonderfully in a home that enjoys being active. He loves to go on walks, and would be thrilled to get several in throughout the day. Although he does fine alone, he really thrives when his people are close. Even though he's a bigger pooch, he's incredibly mindful, gentle, and easy to take care of. He just wants a loving, patient home to help him warm up to people and be the best dog he can be. Brasco also enjoys learning new things and is in the Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modelled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Brasco has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Brasco is learning skills like sit and down, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," and coming when called. Once Brasco successfully completes all the skills on his training plan he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Brasco is working hard to become a wonderful pet and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Brasco after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193 Come meet Brasco! He will show you what a great buddy he can be!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
