self at NBRAN. Her family adopted her as a young pup but soon after, had to deal with some serious medical issues that did not allow much time for Sophie to get the attention and training she needs. She also spent quite a bit of time in a crate as she is not the most trustworthy in the house without close supervision. Foster mom here: Sophie is a happy girl that is very energetic, and somewhat emotionally immature. Since coming into foster, she is only crated at night or when we leave. So that is getting better. She is smart but very stubborn. She does not always know her own space and often uses her feet, mouth and muzzle to try to get what she wants from you. She loves to play, run and get TREATS! She is very vocal and curious. She could benefit from some focused training and more one on one time. She would be a great playmate for a younger dog that could match her energy. She becomes hyper focused on the cats- not ever attempting to hurt them- but it does distract her to the point that she does not listen, so I would not recommend a home that has cats for her. I feel that she will make someone a great companion as well as a great hunter as she loves to point anything that moves. She is now about 90% potty trained, but as with all young dogs, it is a work in progress. She loves to lie on someone's lap and take naps, play with toys and chew on things- so keeping her only chewing appropriate chews is a must. She is AKC registerable. Nbran Here: Sophie requires a fenced in yard. We will also be looking for a home with another playful dog and someone who is home most of the time. The adoption fee for MI/Sophie, who lives in Monroe, MI is $400, which helps to offset our vetting and allows NBRAN to rescue more of these wonderful family members. If you are interested in making MI/Sophie part of your family, please complete the on-line application by visiting .nbran . Contact the Michigan Coordinator Georgene Norris at georgenenbranyahoo and then let your state coordinator know so we can get the ball rolling. A phone interview, home visit and vet check will be required as part of the approval process by your state coordinator, before talking to the foster of Sophie. Transportation can be arranged up 1400 miles with the adopter being responsible for at least the last 100 miles.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
