ul and full of energy when it comes to play sessions! He enjoys his time with his doggy pals. Good with cats? unknown, will not be adopted to a home with a cat Good with children? OK for kids over: 8 years old Activity Preference: Needs in-house activities, other: enjoys playing in the house and time with other dogs IQ: Smart Antilles (Ant)'s favorite things: Kong stuffed with treats and peanut butter (then frozen so it is more fun to play with) Puzzle toys Tug of war toys Car rides!!! He is up for a ride anytime. Play time with other dogs Treats! Antilles (Ant) is good at: meeting people, meeting dogs, staying in a crate, behaving in the house, going for car rides, walking on a leash, cuddling, playing, following commands Ideal home: other: A kind, loving home to give him the opportunity to be the best dog he can be. Training Needs: other: He would enjoy an obedience class! Health issues: No known issues Meet Antilles (Ant) Antilles didn’t have the best start in life. He entered the Shelter as a stray, and as far as we can tell, he never experienced the luxuries of living in a home. He has done a great job acclimating. He may be uncertain about some things, but, is willing to learn (such as walking up hardwood stairs). He does well in his crate over night and while his foster family his out of the house. Ant is eager to please and is food motivated. He has already learned some basic obedience in his foster home. I bet he would enjoy participating in an obedience class! His favorite toys are puzzle toys. He likes to figure out ways to get the treats out, just as he likes to figure out ways to please his humans. He never turns down a game of tug-of-war. His favorite time of day is mealtime (who can blame him!). He also enjoys hopping in the car to pick up the kids from the bus stop. He sits quietly and waits, watching out the window. He will make an excellent side kick on your next road trip. Antilles loves to play, but, sometimes he can be mouthy. He is also guilty of nibbling at the clothes of his foster family when he wants attention. Generally, he is easily redirected, but because of this behavior, we are recommending no small children. His foster home will continue to work with him on this issue. Ant loves playtime with his doggy pals! He is very playful and energetic! He would do best with a doggy sibling that is tolerant of his energy, yet, confidant enough to let him know when they’ve had enough fun. Antilles is a sweetheart and I am certain he will make you smile every day. He will lull you to sleep with his snores and be a loving companion for the rest of his days. He has an adorable face and a personality to match (with a dash of stubbornness)! PLEASE READ: Adopters will not be considered without completing an application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
