Mutts met me at animal control, it was clear I had not been living a very good life for quite a while. Very underweight, and I was literally skin and bones with fleas, scarring and scabs on my body, as well as being heartworm positive. That did not stop Mostly Mutts! They rescued me, started me on medicated baths, have helped me gain weight, going from 31 to 38 lbs., and will cover treatment for my heartworms with their local vet. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I get along well with the two older female dogs in my foster home. I sure would like to run and play with them, but I have to stay calmer due to my heartworm status. If you have a nice dog at home, let’s meet and see if we can be pals! / Cats unknown. / I haven’t met kids yet at Mostly Mutts, so let’s meet and best no toddlers or small children that I may bump over. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I quickly became known as a doggie who is super sweet and gave lots of kisses at the shelter. In fact, they called me a little ‘love bug’ who is ‘like sunshine in a dog’. Isn’t that just the best? I’m playful but have a gentle nature about me that you are sure to love. In my foster home, my initial timidness outside has lessened and my curious side has emerged. / My energy level is a bit hard to judge right now, as I am on restricted activity pending heartworm treatment. My foster says that – once the treatment is over, I’ll be ready to run and play! With that, my energy level is currently 4-6, but very likely to increase after I’ve completed my heartworm treatment and rest period. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I know the ‘sit’ command and my foster is working on ‘place’ with me now. I am sure you can teach me other great doggie commands, too. / My crate manners are very good in my foster home, as I sleep there through the night without issue. / I had accidents at the shelter, but not in my foster home, so yay me! They take me out on a very frequent schedule (every couple of hours), so I’d like that in my new home to reinforce my potty skills. • LIKES/DISLIKES: A definite people dog, I am happiest when hanging out with my people and getting lots of petting. If you want a sunbathing companion, I am your girl, as I love to lie in the sunshine. Toys are becoming more and more fun for me in my foster home, and I am starting to play ‘rolling fetch’ inside with my tennis ball. I love Kongs filled with peanut butter and those fun treat puzzles, too. / I don’t think I would like to be left alone all day, so a family member that is home a good bit of the time would be a good fit for me. Otherwise, I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and training. • MEDICAL: I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed. I am continuing medicated baths for a little longer to help my skin continue to heal. Unfortunately, my previous owner did not keep me on a monthly heartworm preventative, so I am heartworm positive. Mostly Mutts will cover the cost of my treatment with their vet, so local adoption only, please. I am looking for a great home where I will get the love and attention all doggies deserve! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
