tes, through partner networks. Virtual meet n greets can be arranged for all non-local adopters. **Urgent - In Boarding now for 6 mths, need loving home ASAP!** Meet Britt & Sweetpea! These sweet dogs were both in imminent danger, for no reason other than they hadn’t found homes and had been boarding at a vet’s office for MONTHS. They were about to be sent to the local shelter (overcrowded kill-shelter) because the vet couldn’t keep them there indefinitely. That would have been a tragedy and we couldn’t let that happen, so we stepped in. They are both WONDERFUL, SWEET dogs and must be adopted out together. Sweetpea (dark), believed to be at least 5 y/o, has had a very rough life. She was found wandering through a mall parking lot in really bad shape. She was emaciated and heartworm positive, really beaten up. It’s easy to tell that she’s been bred many times. Her right eye is defective but does not need to be removed as per the vet. We think she does not have vision out of the eye, but it is not bothering her medically. SweetPea may be a homely-looking girl but is VERY loving and gentle and great with all dogs and people! Sweetpea might be a Lab/Staff mix. She met and bonded with another girl at the vet named Britt, about the same size and another GREAT dog, like Sweetpea. Britt (tan), believed to be about 3 yrs old, has also had a rough life. Found wandering along the side of a road, the vet took her in, nursed her back to health. Possibly a mastiff/bully mix. Sweetpea and Britt had been waiting at the vet's clinic together for months and became quite bonded. They are both VERY LAID BACK, gentle, loving, good with everyone and everything (although Britt does not seem fond of very, very small dogs). Both have tested well with cats! They may not be much to look at, though we think they are both absolutely gorgeous and very special. This bonded pair will give you no problems and lots of joy!! PLEASE consider opening your heart and home to these two that have had such a rough life and have fought so hard to survive the horrors they have faced, yet are still so incredibly loving. WE CANNOT LET THEM DOWN! To apply to adopt, click on .arcadiarescue/application. If the pet you applied for is no longer available, .arcadiarescue/adopt to see all of our available pets. Note: Some pups are in boarding facilities in order to save their lives. This is far from ideal, they really need to be in loving homes. Due to record number owner surrenders this year, we have zero foster homes available. Fostering helps save another pup from euthanasia in an overcrowded kill shelter needing to free up a kennel. If you can foster, go to .arcadiarescue/foster and fill out a foster application. Thank you!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
