. He may have some Cattle dog in his mix based upon his looks, but we are calling him a Terrier mix. Chili came to Iowa from Oklahoma on April 29th scared to death. He was a stray, living alone, with little human interaction. He was terrified when he arrived and would not allow any human touch. Since then, he has worked hard to trust humans and his confidence has grown tremendously. Chili has continued to make huge strides in his foster home with his confidence and trust towards humans. While he still enjoys being with his canine companions, he will also go with his humans independently. He has learned that a harness and leash mean something fun is coming - a car ride, a trip for a pup cup, a walk, or a ride to the pet store for a new toy. He rides very well in the car. He LOVES to go for long walks and has great leash manners. He is even learning to step into his harness for ease in putting it on. He knows how to sit and will lay down when a treat is involved. He now has free roam at night and has discovered that his human's bed is the best place to snuggle! He has made great strides with potty training and will bark when he wants to go outside. He loves to play outdoors and will dip his paws in the kiddie pool when it's hot. Chili has been to several events with people, including farmer's markets, and is getting more comfortable with strangers and their touch. In his foster home, he has completely settled in, and does everything his foster fur siblings do. Chili would make a great addition to a family looking for a canine companion, a great walking buddy, and an all-around great dog once he's given time to get settled in his furever home. He is highly food motivated, and for him, this is the means to trusting people. High value treats like baked chicken are his favorite. Chili takes a lot of social cues from his foster fur siblings. If they do something, he will too. He will need at least one other dog in his new home for companionship and to help him continue to build confidence. Another compatible dog is required and no applications without another dog living in the home will be considered. He requires a fenced yard as he is still working to walk with a harness and leash. Any applications without a fully fenced yard will not be considered. He is vocal when he wants something or is around new people, so he will need a home without shared walls. Applicants living in apartments, townhomes, or condos will not be considered. He requires a single-family home with a fully fenced yard and another compatible dog living in the home. He has no experience with cats in his foster home and it is unknown how he will react and interact with them. We are looking for a home with no children or children 10 years and older. We believe he would do very when with kids, but due to his lack of experience with humans, small children's quick movements will likely make him nervous. Chili LOVES to play with toys, especially crinkle and squeaky toys, and enjoys chewing on bones. Having lived in a home with a very loving and patient family, Chili now prefers to be where his humans are, and follows his foster family around the house, booping his nose into the back of their leg, or pawing when he wants attention. He enjoys gentle pets on his head and loves scratches on his neck and chest. He does well in his kennel at night and when his foster family is gone. He uses his kennel f or security and goes in it when he is feeling insecure and will even go in it on his own to nap. He is doing well with potty training when taken outside regularly. He will need a family who is patient, gentle, and willing to give him time and love to continue to become the dog he was meant to be. If you are interested in meeting Chili, please complete an online application at hopeanimalrescueofiowa.duplie/forms/196/dog-application Adoption fee is $250 which includes spay/neuter, microchip, and age appropriate vaccines.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
