d I came all the way from Louisiana to find my forever home. Even though I'm a strikingly handsome guy from the south, Minnesota weather does not bother me one bit. I think the snow and spring puddles are really fun! I am a very happy, lively boy, and I love everything - adults, kids, other dogs, cats, treats, toys, riding in the car.....you name it! My foster mom wants you to know I am easy to train and very smart. I haven't been in my new foster home for long, and I already know how to sit nicely for treats and I go to the door when I have to go potty. I am a good listener and come when I am called. My goal is to please you, and I try my very best to do what you ask of me. My foster home has a puppy my age and I love to play with her. They also have cats, which I pretty much ignore. I am an active dog, so I would do best if I had a dog friend to play with or lived with an active family that would give me a job to do and/or an outlet for my energy. Even though I like to play and run around, I am not aggressive, barky or rough with the 10 and 13 year old kids in my foster home. I love to give kisses and be near my foster family. My foster mom says I am a "love", whatever that means. When I'm tired, I crawl up into a lap or snuggle with my foster family's puppy. I've been told I am an all-around great puppy, and I'd love to meet you and show you how fantastic I am! If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal. Once we receive your application, a placement coordinator will be in contact with you as soon as possible. Please check out our website, www.ruffstartrescue.org for more details and additional pictures on any of our animals! All Ruff Start dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention (dogs) as well as heartworm tested (dogs). Ruff Start Rescue is a foster based rescue. Animals are located in homes throughout Minnesota. We do not have a facility where animals are kept. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
