Name: Chief Breed: Catahoula Leopard Hound/Australian Cattle Dog mix
Approximate Age: 8 years old
Approximate Weight: 25-28 lbs
Currently Living at: a DC area foster home -- Chief needs a forever home ASAP!!
Meet Chief! He is an 8 year old, incredibly sweet, gentle and laid-back male Catahoula/Cattle Dog mix. Through no fault of his own, Chief found himself stuck in a rural, overcrowded shelter with not much of a chance for life. The poor guy has had a very rough time of it -- we discovered that two of his legs were broken at some point (likely from being hit by a car). It's clear from the way they healed that he wasn't given any medical treatment, and the breaks were left to heal on their own. In spite of all that, he gets around well, the vet says he doesn't seem to be in pain, and that he could go on to live happily for the rest of his life as a wonderful family dog!
In spite of the tough time he's had, Chief is a sweet and loving boy who is hoping you'll help him get out of the shelter and start a new, better life with someone who loves him and wants a loving new family member in their lives!
Chief says...Hi there, everyone! They call me Chief, and they say that I'm just the most handsome, sweetest boy ever!! Do you have room in your heart and home for a pup like me? I have a beautiful, silver and black mottled coat -- they tell me it's very unique! My fur is super-soft…great for everyone to pet me (hint hint). :-) I weigh about 25-28 pounds (not too big), which makes me a perfect size for an apartment, house or condo!! They say I am probably some sort of Catahoula/Cattle Dog mix…all I know is that I'm a happy pup and I love to get lots of pets, and give lots of happy tail wags!

Chief says...I don't know why, but somehow I ended up in this cold shelter. It's a pretty cold and scary place. I don't get to go outside, it gets really really loud when new dogs come in (which happens all the time), and no one comes to visit me. So I get more and more scared here. I really hope I can get out of here really soon!
Don't you think I would look really cute as your new Facebook cover photo, enjoying walks in the winter sunshine and rolling in the grass (or snow)? And how I'd love to relax inside after a day of fun adventures. I just really want to explore the world, then nap and dream of all the adventures we'll have together. I would just LOVE trips to the park and hikes in the woods -- I love to discover new things!
Sweet Chief makes friends with everyone he meets. At around 8 years old, he is certainly past the puppy phase (no all-night crying or bathroom breaks every 2 hours!) and crazy energy that young dogs have, but like any dog, still needs regular exercise to stay happy and healthy.
Chief's new person or family will need to make sure he gets lots of socialization and playtime, if he feels like it, with other dogs and people to keep up the good social skills he has already! And like all dogs we adopt out, he'll need to go to obedience classes to build a strong bond with his people, and help him become a well behaved companion or family member. Chief seems to like all the people he meets, and can't wait to wiggle his way into your heart and home.
Like most dogs, Chief might need a refresher on his house training when he gets to a new home. He will also need to go to obedience school so he can continue to be a well-socialized dog!

After being treated, dogs who were heartworm-positive should suffer no long-term effects as long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative.
