ave a question? Please read our Frequently Asked Questions and Adoption Processed Explained documentation. Statistics Name: Tommy Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Age: 1.5 Years Size: Small 13 lbs. ~Small range: Up to 25 lbs Adoption Donation: $180 (applicable sales tax included). Adoption fees may be paid by cash or check. Other: Neutered Male, Vaccinations current, Microchip, No young children Tommy is very friendly and sweet! Foster Home Feedback ** Tommy is a sweet special needs boy looking for a special adopter who is willing to take the time it requires to get to know him. He gets attached to his person but would do best in a home without young children. He has been diagnosed with either a biochemical/neurotransmitter imbalance, primary structural brain malformation or neuro-degenerative disease. (the exact diagnosis was not obtained as a CT/MRI was not recommended by Blue Pearl Referral Hospital, because there is no treatment option for any of the previously listed conditions). Tommy will periodically display signs of reactivity/aggression, this is believed to be not pain related, it is believed to be related to the suspected brain lesion. Any potential adopter would need to understand that this behavior is normal for Tommy, especially with strangers. This poor guy also has hind end weakness related to cervical or thoracolumbar spinal cord disease. This causes him to have hind limb weakness and incoordination. It will also cause him to occasionally have inappropriate urination/defecation. Tommy may need acupuncture and chiropractic to help with back pain in the future He has been diagnosed with Bilateral luxating patellas, hip dysplasia and malformed femurs (causing a bow-legged appearance). Based on the suspected brain lesion, surgery is not recommended, keeping him comfortable is the priority and eventually, pain medications will likely be necessary. Right now Tommy is on a medication for anxiety. If you have time, patience and the understanding to adopt a special needs dog like Tommy please apply! 3/19/18: Tommy is such a cute little thing and is settling in nicely. He is a good mix of puppy and mature dog; playful at times but loves to relax beside you too. Tommy does great in his kennel but can get noisy if he feels it's time to get out. He would love nothing more than to sleep in the bed with you if you allowed. Tommy does take a little time to warm up to new people but once he is comfortable, he just wants to sit in your lap for snuggles and kisses. He goes potty outside and we are working on keeping him from marking inside. Tommy loves my big dogs and gets along with them really well. He takes a bath like a champ, no issues. He will make someone a great companion! To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: .4luvofdog

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
