Thank you to the universe, and thank you Abandoned Angels! My name is PEPPER and today was the best day ever. That’s because it was my lucky day and the beginning of my new life! You see, my time in the pound was up, and we all know what that means. I was struggling to come to terms with it all, but then I got a reprieve. At the 11th hour (and maybe 59th minute) Abandoned Angels pulled me. They did so though I’m not a Cocker (my genetics are anyone’s guess). It’s thought that I’m a “designer mix” known as a “Pekalier” (a Pekingese crossed with Cavalier King Charles), but that does not matter much. The fact is I’m just Pepper and that is good enough!! It’s been a really ruff couple of weeks, there is nothing more to say. I lived with my family since puppyhood, but then was given away. Those second owners then discarded me, after keeping me only 3 weeks. I was dumped at Philly animal control, and then they just walked away. I ask you, did I deserve this? Because I did not one thing wrong. I was so scared and confused at check in that I bit while getting my shots. The vet tech was pretty cool about it, but it meant an X through my name. A bite means can’t be adopted, there is no second chance. I tried to explain what happened: I am heavily matted and underweight, terrified in an urban shelter, with dogs all over the place. I was told there are no excuses, only Rescue could now come for me. Thankfully AACSR is accepting me, even though I’m a Philly boy. Can you help me out with an adoptive home, where I can unpack my things? Even a foster home would do very nicely as a place to stay for now. I am estimated to be around 6 years old and have weighed in at 18.6lbs. I am up to date on all my shots, microchipped and neutered. I will be groomed before adoption and will even have a dental. If you are interested in helping me, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com or visit www.nyabandonedangels.com, where you can complete an application online. I may have a salt and pepper look, but I am still very full of life. With much affection ... Pepper xx

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
