ADOPT ME! Dr. Dennis Boelter owned Akron (Ohio) Animal Clinic and Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital (Akron, Ohio) for 43 years. A tragic accident took Dr. Boelter’s life in December of 2017. As a tribute to Dr. Boelter, a very special Canine Castaways supporter will pay the adoption fee for this dog's adoption.. For more information on "Boelter's Bunch", please visit .caninecastaways/special-adoption-programs Please consider opening your heart and home to a senior dog! NAME: Stella BREED: Long Hair Chihuahua SEX: female COLOR: black/white AGE: approx 13 years as of March 2018 WEIGHT: Currently around 11 lbs - came in very overweight. Should be closer to 8 lbs - she is on a diet and doing well. FOSTERED BY: Sue LOCATED IN: Naples NOTES FROM FOSTER FAMILY: Stella is working on getting her groove back. She came to us after she injured her ACL but she was not a candidate for surgery due to being obese. We committed to helping Stella make some life style changes and it has really paid off. She started at almost 16 pounds and is now down to 11 pounds. You can really tell that she feels so much better with the weight gone. Now instead of waddling across the room, she happily trots. Her leg is much better and you don't even know she had an issue. Stella does great with other dogs and cats. She loves to explore the yard and to have a comfy bed to sleep in when she is ready for a nap. She will need a family committed to keeping her weight under control. She truly seems excited with the changes in her life and is a real inspiration. Stella would probably be the happiest in a low key home. She is a very sensitive dog and prefers a calm person and calmer dogs. She would also love a fenced yard. She likes to go out and do her business without a leash attached and she can check things out at her pace. After Stella was with us for a little while we noticed that she seem to be panting a lot and that something wasn’t quite right. We knew she had a heart murmur but at the time were not aware that she also had high blood pressure. She recently went to see the doggie cardiologist and was diagnosed and is now on daily blood pressure medication and is doing amazing. The medication is inexpensive at approximately $20 a month. She will need someone that is committed to taking her to see the cardiologist at least once a year for a check up or if any concerns arise. The average cost for an annual check up with a cardiologist is around $300-$400. This would be in addition to her normal vet visits with her regular veterinarian. Although this is an added expense she is an amazing dog and definitely worth it. If you think Stella sounds like a dog that would be a good fit for you and your home please contact her foster mom for additional information or if you have any questions. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
