o .allamericanmuttrescue/forms and complete your adoption application online. I AM A SUPER SENIOR! Early in life Nemo was in a household with lots of other little dogs. Then for a while he was an only pup and he decided he needed to be the guardian/protector of his two special people … to the point of being unpleasant to others. Due to some serious health issues in his human family, he is now back with AAMR. Now, back in foster care with other dogs around, he is not protective of his foster family. Nemo has a significant heart murmur and is currently on 2 daily medications. He is doing well, but the medications must be continued for the rest of his life, as this will likely be a progressive condition. His new family will need to be sure that they consider this effort and expense, and we know he is worth it. His medications are approximately $70/month. Nemo enjoys belly rubs (but only when HE wants them), and he loves to nap on the pillows of a human’s bed, but he is not particularly a lap dog. And he does not like being forced to do anything that he doesn’t want to. He is a smart boy and he responds best to positive reinforcement. He will do best in a moderately active household where people who have time to spend with him, but who will not encourage or allow him to become overprotective. Nemo loves his foster family, and he has no idea he is 'homeless', but we believe every pup deserves a loving family of his very own! Approximate age/birthdate: born ~2009 Weight/size: 12 lbs Housebroken: YES (still wants to be top dog so may still try to mark territory) Crate trained: YES Personality: reserved, cautious of strangers, protective of those he loves Energy level: medium/low Fenced yard required?: Yes ... no exceptions ... physical fence. He loves to spend time outside, especially when there are squirrels and birds to watch. He can be stubborn and will not come when called until he is good and ready. Without a fence, he will be a definite flight risk. Does he/she jump fences? NO Leash walk: YES Obedience training: Knows ‘sit’ Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK … gets a little stressed at first Spayed/neutered: YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES Microchipped: YES Social with other dogs: He does OK with most dogs 20 lbs and under as long as they stay out of his face, and he generally avoids larger dogs. He will growl and snap to warn them off if they get in his 'personal space'. He actually does have a couple of small dog buddies and he does enjoy the doggy company. Social with cats: Do not know … hasn’t been around cats Good with children: Has not been around children in foster care, but given his personality he would probably be better with no children around Adoption donation: $75 We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits. You can expedite the process by providing accurate email addresses for all your references. Time to make phone calls is limited and we often have multiple applications in process. We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible. When your application is approved, we will schedule a meet-and-greet to see if Nemo picks you too. If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee, and an adoption contract to be signed. Please feel free to email weluvpupshotmail if you have additional questions.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
