t if I’m available to meet during the week. I was adopted from MM’s last year, but my family split up and can’t take me with them, so I find myself looking for a new family to love. I’m looking for a home where there’s a stay or work from home family member as I just love the company and don’t think I’d be happy if you were gone all day. I’m also a good traveler, so you can take me places with you. I love being right next to you, usually cuddled up in a little warm blanket. I’m sweet and lovey, and I’ll give you some kisses too. I have a few medical challenges, so a family that can help me with these is what I need. They are, some arthritis in my back which I’m on a medication for. A grade 3 heart murmur, so I take a daily pill for that which I like in peanut butter. I was also diagnosed with Megaesophagus. So, I take medicine for that too. I must eat standing up, so my foster Dad feeds me in a Bailey Chair which is a chair designed for dogs with Megaesophagus. I have to stand in this chair for about 10 minutes. I’ll need to be on those medications for the rest of my life. I sleep a good bit, and I don’t need exercise as anything more than a short potty walk tends to make my back hurt. I do well with the calm dogs in my foster home, though I sometimes get a little cranky towards them if they don’t give me my space. However, I really didn’t like a larger dog I met, and I went after her a couple of times. Not too smart, I know, but I had to tell her I did not want to play! I’d be perfectly happy being an only dog too, as I bond with my people and nothing makes me happier than one on one time with my favorite person. I coexist fine with the dogs in my foster home but will leave the area if they want to join me and my human, so I don’t need a relationship with them. Nice kitties should be fine with me as I’ve napped in a doggie bed with 2 at the MM shelter. If you have other calm and gentle pets, let’s meet! I met a gentle 12-year-old girl and we had a nice time together, so older gentle kids like her could be a good fit, let’s meet. I don’t like playing or being picked up due to my back pain though. My potty manners are getting a refresher in my foster home and I used to be great at using pee pads if you lay them down for me, so that may be a good option again. Sometimes I confuse smaller throw rugs for pee pads, though, oops! My former family reported that I could dig out from their fence, so please don’t leave me unattended in the yard. Since I’m so tiny, the birds of prey could also carry me away if left alone outside. Energy level: 1-2. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, neutered and my adoption fee is $100.00 which also includes an engraved name tag, Martingale collar & leash.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
